Cruising On Your Birthday!

This card was made for Craft Roulette #252 whose parameters included a card for a teenager, morning colors, fairy (fairies), and bow(s). I choose to interpret fairy as fairy lights and bow as a bow of a ship.

Watch the process video to see how I made this card.

Cardbase: My double sided paper from Carta Bella was cut into a 6.5×10-inch rectangle and folded in-half. The wave decorations were cut using Karen Burniston’s Ocean Edges die set.

Cruise Ship Pop-Up: The cruise ship is made with two die sets by Karen Burniston – Boat Pop-Up and Cruise Ship Add-ons. (You can watch assembly videos for both sets by clicking on their links and going to the bottom of the linked pages.)

Pear Blossom Press Twinkle Lights were used to light-up the ship and the ship’s wheel (from Karen Burniston’s Cruise Charms die set with Pear Blossom Press’ “push” stamp) covers the battery and indicates where to press to turn on the lights.

Sentiments: Β The “Wishing you…” sentiment is from Karen Burniston’s Cruise Greetings stamp set and the “HBD!” is from Craft Roulette’s Funn Friends #02 stamp set. The sentiments are stamped in black ink on labels cut from Karen Burniston’s Rectangles and Labels – Crosshatch and Labels – Crosshatch die sets. You can download the paperclip slip.

Envelope: Β The card fits into an A7 (5x 7-inches) size envelope with “HBD!” stamped all over the back flap and sealed with a sticker from the paper collection.

Bon Voyage and Smooth Seas

It’s Sneak Peek Week for Karen Burniston’s January 2025 release of eight new dies and four new clear stamps sets. For this Bon Voyage card I used several of the new sets including: Ocean Edges and Cruise Ship Add-On along with the previously released Boat Pop-Up and Rectangles and Labels – Crosshatch die sets and the new Cruise Greetings stamp set. The new release will be available on January 27, 2025.

Watch the process video to see how I made this card.

Cardbase: Using a 8.5×5.5-inch rectangle of double-sided patterned cardstock, fold rectangle in half to form a 4.25-inch wide by 5.5-inch tall side fold card. Decorate the inside with wavy ripples using the Ocean Edges dies. (I choose to let the cardbase paper pattern be one shade of the ocean waves while the other waves are cut from decorative cardstock with white water ripples on them. If you make several layers of waves the card will be very thick and hard to close. If this happens use the special die in the Cruise Ship Add-On set to cut two slots on either side of the fold to slide a paper clip through to hold the card open.)

Cruise Ship: Follow the directions to assemble the basic Boat Pop-Up (Assembly video at the bottom of the die set’s linked page.) Watch the video above for how to assemble the Cruise Ship Add-Ons. (I had an issue the first time I glued in the ship to the card. So, there are also tips on how to fix bent U-support pieces and ship’s tabs in the video.)

Sentiments: The inside stamped sentiments are from the Cruise Greetings stamp set and the fancy labels are the smaller label die in the Rectangles and Labels – Crosshatch set. Decorative paper journaling cards are the outside card sentiments.

Envelope: The card fits into an A2 (4.25x 5.5-inches) size envelope with an anchor and chain glued to the back flap. The anchor is from the Cruise Add-Ons die set.

Snowflake Kisses and Warm Wishes

It’s Sneak Peak Week for Karen Burniston’s October 2024 release of new dies and sentiment stamps. These dies will be available for purchase on October 28, 2024 on the KB Riley LLC website.

Today’s card is an A2 size top-fold card that uses the new Snow Charms die set and Winter Hugs stamp set.

Watch the process video to see how this card was made.

Cardbase:  Fold in half an 11×4.25 inch piece of white cardstock to form a top-fold A2 (4.25×5.5 inch) size cardbase. Cover all four panels with rectangles of patterned paper using the largest die from the Rectangles – Crosshatch set. Cut a frame of white glitter cardstock using the same die and the next largest die and glue to the front panel.

Mug of Cocoa:  Using the Tea and Coffee Pop-Ups die set cut one mug from red cardstock covered with clear packing tape. Cut one of the largest snowflake in the Snow Charm set, snip off charm loop and cover with glitter gloss before gluing to mug center. Allow to dry before rounding/shaping mug with a bone folder. Cut from white shimmer cardstock the cupcake frosting piece from the Cupcake Add-Ons set and adhere to back of the mug with two small foam dots. Cut one steam piece from the Tea and Coffee Pop-Ups set from clear vellum.

Cut the mechanism piece and arm strip from the same patterned paper as inside of card. Cut a white crosshatch label from the Rectangles and Labels – Crosshatch set and trim off about 1/2-inch from long side. Glue the large piece of label onto the inside card floor centering it up against the fold. Glue the mechanism into card as instructed on the assembly video located at the bottom of this linked page. Attach arm to mechanism. Using a large foam dot adhere the mug to the front of mechanism. Glue vellum steam piece to arm making sure it is positioned so it does not peak-out of the card when it is closed.

Decorations: The card front decorations are from the Snow Charms set, along with some snowflake sequin mix elements. The inside spoon is from the Tea and Coffee Pop-Ups set.

Sentiments: Β All the sentiments come from the Winter Hugs stamp set. All the fancy labels come from the Rectangles and Labels – Crosshatch die set. β€œSnowflake kisses & winter wishes” was stamped on clear vellum with StazOn ink and the whole label was covered with glitter gloss. The vellum was adhered to the card front using glue dots.

Envelope: Β The card fits into an A2 (4.25x 5.5-inches) size envelope. The back flap was decorated with a hat from the Winter Animals set and mittens from the Snow Charms set.

Sailboat Pop-Up Card

It’s Sneak Peek Week for Karen Burniston’s June 2024 release of new dies and clear stamps. For this card of encouragement, I used several of the new sets including: Set Sail Borders, Sailboat Add-Ons, Boat Pop-Up and Just A Note Lorna Add-Ons die sets and the Sail Away clear stamp set. The new release will be available on July 1, 2024.

Watch the YouTube video below to learn how the card was made.

Sailboat Pop-Up: This pop-up is made with two die sets – the base is the Boat Pop-Up and the sails, pendant, railing, life preservers and anchor are all in the Sailboat Add-Ons set.

Cardbase: The card base is made up of two rectangles On 4 x8 1/2-inches and the other 4 x 8 3/4-inches. The longer piece is scored at 8 1/2-inches for the tab to glue to back of the other piece. The card front scene is made from waving water paper brushed with glitter gloss and Distress Oxide ink and a large blending brush. The birds are hand-drawn. The porpoise is from the Set Sail Borders die set. On the card back is a border of shells from the Set Sail Borders die set and colored with alcohol markers.

Sentiments: The card front β€œwaving hello” is die-cut letters from the Mini Alphabet and the β€œhello” is from the Just A Note Lorna Add-Ons. The stamped sentiments inside the card are from the Sail Away stamp set. A white label inside is for a personal message and was cut from the Labels – Crosshatch die set.

Envelope: Β The card fits into a #10 business envelope stamped with β€œAlways take the scenic route” from the Sail Away stamp set.

Camping at the Lake

This card was made for Craft Roulette #208 whose parameters included a joy-fold card, buggy ride colors, sticks and stones element and trim(s) or trimming(s).

For this joy-fold card I used the colors of a buggy ride to the lake to go camping with a fishing stick and campfire stones. The lake is made of blue rick-rack trim on acetate. All dies used are by Karen Burniston.

Cardbase: A joy-fold is basically a smaller card that interleaves with a larger card. My smaller card is an oval cut from acetate and sandwiched between some kraft splattered cardstock with the cardstock folded and glued into the larger purchased 5×7 cardbase. The larger cardbase had its front panel trimmed to 4-inches wide. The larger cardbase was covered with green grass paper inside (covering over the kraft cardstock) and its front panel covered with blue dotted paper.

Lake: The front of the oval acetate flap was covered with rick-rack using double-sided tape. A kraft cardstock tab was added to make it easier to open the velco fastener that keeps the card close and the bam boxes from popping open. The tab is stamped with β€œLift the flap.” The sentiment of “Hello nature” is cut using the Word Set 6 – Summer set.

Tent: Watch the assembly video at the bottom of the linked page. The tent pop-up can be made with out the cording, but I chose to add the cording using tiny brads on another layer of grass green cardstock to attach it.

Animals: The racoon and fox are made with the Woodland Animals die set. They are glued to small bam boxes to make them pop-up. The fish are from the Camping Charms set and are colored with pink and mint green glitter brush markers. The fishing stick is also in the Camping Charms set.

Campfire: The pop-up campfire is made up of five dies that form the campfire pit and burning logs. It is part of the Tent Pop-Up set.

A Pop-Up Cruise Tag Card

It’s Sneak Peek Week for Karen Burniston’s February 2024 release. These dies will be available for purchase on February 19, 2024 on the KB Riley LLC website.

Who doesn’t enjoy a vacation and this tag card is sure to let those going on a cruise vacation know they are in for some fun.

This pop-up tag card uses Karen Burniston dies – specifically the Purse Pop-Up, Topper Tags, Tag Book Pop-Up, Cruise Charms and Tiny Accessories 4.

Tag Cardbase: Cut two of the largest tags in the Topper Tags die set from kraft cardstock. Use the hinge die in the Tag Book Pop-Up or cut a rectangle of 1.5×3.5-inch and fold in half for the card hinge that is glued to the inside of the two tags. Cut two large tags of decorative cardstock and glue over the inside of the tags and hinge. Cut another two large tags of decorative papers and glue to the front and back of the card. (My inside decorative cardstock did not cover the entire tag, so I cut the top scalloped section of the tag from kraft cardstock.)

Pop-Up Suitcase: Follow the assembly video at the bottom of the Purse Pop-Up page link instructions to make the suitcase on a small tag cut from the Tab Book Pop-Up set. I cut the handle again twice, strap once and 20 of the corner pieces from dark brown. Cut the buckle from gold cardstock. (I used a bit of gold foil packaging form some chocolates.) The strap can be glued to the rolled under piece as long as it doesn’t block the movement of the handle as it slides open and closed.

Scuba Gear and Decorations: Using the Tiny Accessories 4 die set, cut the mask and snorkel once from black and once from blue. trim off the top and bottom knobs of the blue snorkel and glue on the black snorkel. Glue the blue mask onto the black mask to give it depth. Save the black center section of the mask to use as sunglasses. Cut a pair of flippers from black. (I had images of a passport and a map of tropical islands that I glued to the inside of the card as well as the airplane sticker on the suitcase. More travel images were added to the back and front of the card.)

Sentiments: The ship and “bon voyage” sentiment on the card from come from the Cruise Charms set while the inside tags come from the Tag Book Pop-Up set. Hemp cord is tied to the tags.

Envelope: The tag card easily fits in a #10 business envelope which I used a paper image to decorate the back flap.

A Map To The Caribbean

Taking a sailing vacation around the Caribbean Sea deserves a special bon voyage card.

For this shape card, I used products from Scrappy Tails’ new Nautical 2023 June Collection.

Map: Stamp on kraft paper the Caribbean Map Stamp. Using the coordinating stencil set –Layering Caribbean Map Trio, start with the grid stencil and brown ink. Use the next two stencils to add color to the land masses, ships, whales and compass. (I found it easier to use a white opaque marker to color the sails than use the stencil.) I used the A7 Compass Scroll die to cup the map making sure the words of β€œCaribbean Sea” were visible. To create the rolled back of the scroll, I die cut just the scroll portions of the die from kraft paper and trimmed to fit the map. I daubed brown ink to shade and age the scroll and map.

Cardbase:  Cut three scrolls from kraft paper using the A7 Compass Scroll die. Cut a 2 1/4-inch x 4 1/4-inch rectangle from kraft paper and fold in half longwise for the card hinge. Glue the hinge to one of the scrolls to be the cardback as shown in photo. Glue hinge to back of map scroll, matching the shape edges.

Trim over hanging bits of hinge. Glue the scroll edges together at hinge fold. Trim the remaining two kraft scrolls to fit inside the card and cover hinge.

Compass: Cut the nine dies that make up the compass from the A7 Compass Scroll die set. Use lightweight colored cardstock for the three main parts and ink them to provide depth and shading. Cut the smaller bits from gold cardstock.  Glue completed compass to inside of card.

Sentiment: Stamp in black, the β€œLet your dreams set sail” from the Set Sail stamp set on the top left of the map scroll.

Envelope: The card fits into an A7 envelope that I decorated the back flap with the Caribbean Islands banner fussy cut from the map.

Train Ride Through The Canadian Rockies

It’s the Karen Burniston Design Team March 2023 Challenge and the theme is Vacation!

I’ve always wanted to take the train from Vancouver through the Canadian Rocky Mountains and this card pays tribute to that train trip using Karen Burniston’s Twist Panel Pop-Up and Train Pivot Panels.

First, I watched the assembly videos for Train Pivot Panel and the Twist Panel Pop-Up. (If I had been paying attention, I would have realized that when the train pivot panels installed on the twist panel mechanism would need a card base that has 6-inches from the fold to its outer edge. Hence my train engine juts out from the card bottom by 3/4-inch, and I had to hide it with ribbon.)

When adding the twist panel mechanism to card larger than 5-inches, I use a metal ruler and a craft knife to cut the ends of the arms free and I glue additional patterned paper behind the mechanism to hide the openings that the arms make.  My patterned papers have 3-inch-tall scenes that I cut to go inside the card at the top and bottom of the twist mechanism to added depth for mountains the train is going through. The actual train panels are cut from coordinating paper of fir trees.

While the Canadian Rail trains are diesel trains rather than steam, I tried to make the train have the Canadian flag colors and I found a tiny red maple leaf sequin in my shaker elements stash. The train track comes from the Train Elements die set.

For the outside of my card, I created some maple leaf paper on my computer and printed it. The β€œEnjoy the ride” sentiment was released by Karen Burniston as part of the train themed dies. I used her Mini Alphabet to finish the sentiment. (I find using removable paper tape to line up the lettering works well with a t-ruler.)

For the card back, I used a vintage Canadian railway sticker and a heart sticker to hide the ribbon end.

A piercing tool (an ice pick) was used to poke the holes for the ribbon.

An Underwater Adventure

It’s Sneak Peek week for Karen Burniston’s February 2023 release!

Needing a card for a couple going on an oceanic ecological tour, I decided to create a luggage tag card with an underwater scene.

The card uses a variety of Karen Burniston dies including ones from her February 2023 release of beach themed dies.

For the card base I had some faux leather mermaid scales 8-inch wide ribbon that I die-cut two large tags from using the tag book pop-up die set. I next die-cut from some underwater background papers two more of the large tags. Having watched the assembly video for the tag book, I knew I needed to die-cut the hinge piece and attach it to the cardstock tags before I adhered them to the faux leather outer tags. (Because I wasn’t sure if the faux leather would adhere well with glue, I also used doubled-sided tape to attach the paper and fabric backed tag pieces.)

Wanting the jellyfish from the new sea charms set to look as if they were floating in the water, I cut the inside pivot mechanism from some medium weight clear plastic packaging. Because of its thickness the dies embossed the plastic but did not cut through the plastic. I used my surgical scissors to cut the mechanism out. Because of the see-thru quality of the plastic, I had to used double-sided tape to attach the inside panels together. To adhere the plastic to the paper lined inside of the card base, I used glue dots which look a little like air bubbles. (I adhered only one side of the mechanism until I was finished decorating the background with creatures and shells. Once satisfied that the background was complete, I adhered the remaining side of the mechanism.)

To decorate the card, I used the sea turtle from the sea animals set, the jellyfish, clam shell, crab and seahorse from the sea charms set, and the anchor, chain and β€œbon voyage” from the cruise charms set. The chain and jellyfish help hide the tabs the connect the pivot mechanism. (Because I used double-sided tape to adhere the decorations to the plastic, I had to push and prod the adhesives to hide behind the shapes, but some still sticks out. To made those bits of adhesive not interfere with the mechanism, I brushed anti-static powder over the areas to absorb the stickiness.)

On the front of the card, I used a spiral shell and jellyfish from the sea charms set along with the octopus from the ocean animals set and little sharks cut from the new beach borders die set. On the back of the card I cut a crosshatch rectangle panel using the first crosshatch rectangles set from leftover back ground paper and used the tiny sharks border again to edge it.

Because I hadn’t planned to add ribbon to the inside panel tags (the plastic was too thick to easily cut), used two ribbons -a narrow and a wide – on each of the card base’s two tags.

This card is to be hand delivered, so no envelope.
