12 Days of Christmas Trees – Day 7

Each day for 12 days, I will be showing card variations made with Karen Burniston’s Christmas Tree Pop-up die.  I recommend watching her assembly video before attempting to cut and assemble the pop-up tree.

For all of these cards I started with an A7 size card base (10 x 6 ½ inches), but because my die cutting machine can only accommodate 6-inch-wide pieces of paper, I had to trim the cards down to 10 x 6 inches.

Day 7 – Home for the Holidays-Joy to the World

HFH-Joy-Inside

Using a paper collection kit makes inspiration and color matching easy and gives you the finished color coordinated cards that you might find in a high-end boutique shop.

I used the Echo Park Home for the Holidays Collection Kit by Alisha Gordon for this card. You can cut a 12 x 12 inch sheet into two 10 x 6 inch card bases (Ornaments #HFH73006). From a second sheet of 12 x 12 paper (Holiday Swirl #HFH73003) you will cut four sets of the tall center tree pieces and four of the smaller side trees. (I cut the paper into three strips – two strips wide enough for the center trees – folding these strips over to be able to double cut the large center trees.) by double cutting you have perfectly matched front and back for the center two sections. Glue them together.  This adds strength and ensures the tree is green from all angles of viewing. The star atop the tree is the only paper not contained in the kit. It is a holographic paper, cut twice for each piece so the star can be seen as gold sparkles from all angles.

HFH-Joy-Front

I used one of the smaller toppers and added the “Joy to the World sticker as well as scrap stripes from the cutting out of the trees for the inside. I positioned it off-center to camouflage the tree stand mechanism hole.

HFH-Joy-Inside -CU

While I inadvertently made the outside front a side fold card, inside I made it a top fold card to make the most of the message card.

Day 6 – Gingerbread Joy

Gingerbread Joy -CU Inside

This card was inspired by my grandmother who always made her grandchildren gingerbread men for the holidays.  Sara Davis’s Winter Wonderland-Frosty Christmas dies have the proportionally correct size ornament, candy cane and gingerbread man for the pop-up tree.

Gingerbread Joy -Front

Gingham checked paper became the cover base paper while scrap pieces from the inside decorations (green strips from the inside tree pieces and the circle tree skirt) came into play with decorating the cover. The Gingerbread man hints at what is to come when opening the card.

Gingerbread Joy - Inside

The tree ornaments were decorated using gel and metallic pens following the embossed features from the dies. Merry Christmas is die-cut as well. The “with love” tag is hand lettered.

Day 5 – Give Joy – Holly

Giving Joy Holly-CU side view

This card was inspired by the desire to use the snowflakes and holly embellishments from Papercrafter Issue 126 Snowglobe Shaker Card Kit and mistakes I made in cutting the pop-up mechanism.

Giving Joy Holly-Front

Because I placed the die that cuts the two flaps to hold the tree stand upside-down, I ended with the assembled tree sticking out of the top of the card. To cover the half inch of tree that showed, I cut a border from Angela Poole’s Flutterfly’s die set. (Another fun pop-up card to make!). Next I cut the border apart using the top section for the front of the card and the bottom section for the back of the card. Left over pieces were used to embellish the front of the card.

I made a second mistake when cutting the two flaps into the card base. I had covered the front of the card before I had cut the flaps leaving a hole which I patched with a matching piece of holly paper and then covered with the holly and snowflake embellishments.

12 Days of Christmas Trees – Day 4

Each day for 12 days, I will be showing card variations made with Karen Burniston’s Christmas Tree Pop-up die.  I recommend watching her assembly video before attempting to cut and assemble the pop-up tree.

For all of these cards I started with an A7 size card base (10 x 6 ½ inches), but because my die cutting machine can only accommodate 6-inch-wide pieces of paper, I had to trim the cards down to 10 x 6 inches.

Day 4 – Snowy Day

Snowy Day-Front

Inspiration for this card came on a very hot summer day.  I have had the blue snowy paper (Me & My BIG Idea CDCX-340) for many years. The little bit of sparkle to the dots of snow is fun and when doubled up forms a stiff card base.  The die-cut snow flakes come from a set from Dies by Chloe snowflakes die set From Die Cutting Essentials issue 45.

Snowy Day-inside

The snowy swirls on the tree came from an older Karen Burniston die set called Merry Christmas Pop-up from Elizabeth Craft Designs.  All of the snowflakes were cut from white card stock that had been adhered to a 6 x 6 inch sheet of double-sided tape before being die cut.

Snowy Day-cu-inside

I added some glitter drops to the tree. and snowflakes for that extra sparkle that don’t show up well in the photos.

12 Days of Christmas Trees – Day 3

Each day for 12 days, I will be showing card variations made with Karen Burniston’s Christmas Tree Pop-up die.  I recommend watching her assembly video before attempting to cut and assemble the pop-up tree.

For all of these cards I started with an A7 size card base (10 x 6 ½ inches), but because my die cutting machine can only accommodate 6-inch-wide pieces of paper, I had to trim the cards down to 10 x 6 inches.

Day 3 – Holly Joy

Holly Joy - inside

With such a busy background paper as the red holly is, the inside decorations are simple. The bird and “with love” tag are from Papercrafter Issue 126 Snowglobe Shaker Card Kit. The white rectangle is from a patterned die. The tree’s star is cut from gold holographic card stock.

Holly Joy - Front

The outside of the tree pop-up cards need to have a cover paper on both the front and back to hide the holes cut for the inside mechanism. I used a kraft paper for the front and back covers because it matched the “joy” sentiment topper. The half circles are the cut outs from the tree skirts on the inside. The green zig-zag trim is the scrap from between the big trees die.

Two different stamps were used on the front and back of the envelope. The Studio 112 stamp of four trees acts a seal to the envelope while the Disney Vintage stamp gives a hint as to what is inside the card from the front of the envelope.

Day 2 – Home for the Holidays – Village

HFH-Village- Inside-CU

Echo Park Home for the Holidays Collection Kit by Alisha Gordon made this card quick and easy as well as professional looking. I used the Snowflake paper (HFH73013) for the tree and Festive Chevron (HFH73002) for the card base. A large card sentiment topper for the front and stickers for additional decoration inside and out made it a super-fast card to create.

HFH-Village- Front

This a top fold card because of the orientation of the sentiment topper.  The tree inside had two layers cut for the taller two center tree pieces so that all sides of the tree have the green side of the paper while smaller side trees are single layer because the white side of the paper is not visible. The tree base was cut from a scrap piece of black cardstock The holes created by the tree mechanism cutting into the card base were pieced from the inside of the card to match the outside pattern. A stick covers the front hole.

Day 1 – Give Joy – Plaid

Giving Joy Plaid- CU Inside

The inspiration for this card came from the red plaid back I have saved from a Christmas card I had had received in past years. I cut the tree skirt from the center of the card where there was writing knowing that the tree stand would cover the writing. The remaining plaid card became the frame for the cover sentiment topper. Some yellow ribbon around the frame for accent.

Giving Joy Plaid- Front

A woodgrain paper is the base for the inside of the card. The die-cut “Merry Christmas” and the printed embellishments of wrapped presents and the black Scottie dog complete the decorations. A white patterned rectangle is for a personal message.

Giving Joy Plaid- Inside

The gold cord is tied in three circles which are laid under the tree branches with the knot and cord tails tucked into the back of the tree holes. The circles are not glued as they need to move when the card is being folded-up. The tree’s star is cut from gold holographic card stock.

I am a hoarder of leftover pieces from other projects which came into play with this card.
