Small Quilt Themed Pop-Up Birthday Card

This card was made for Craft Roulette #267whose parameters included a 4 Bar card, craft store colors, se(s)/(ing)/sewn element, and stencil. I made a birthday card using dies by Karen Burniston and PinkFresh and sentiment stripes by Waffle Flower

Watch the process video to see how I made this card.

Cardbase:  Score and fold a 7×5-inch piece of heavy white cardstock into 3.5×5-inch side fold card.

Stenciled Quilt Top Background:  Follow directions in video to stencil the background. To create the stencils use 6×8.5-inch sheets of 100lb cardstock that have the stitched diamond die cut into the center of each of the four sheets. Using the stitch marks as your guide, cut the stencils using a craft knife and a metal straight edge or ruler.

Pop-up Twist Panel:  Watch the assembly video at the bottom of the linked page. Stamp the quilt stamp onto medium weight cardstock. Die-cut the large mechanism from the Little Twist Panel Pop-Up set out of the stamped cardstock. Cut the panel from white cardstock. Cut decorative panels using the dies in set with your stamped cardstock.

Sewing Charms:  Assemble as directed in Karen’s assembly video located at the bottom of the linked page for the Sewing Charms.

Envelope:  The card fits into an A2 (4.25x 5.5-inches) size envelope.

An Art Deco Birthday card

This card was made for Craft Roulette #230 whose parameters included shaped card, peacock colors, tall element and XOXO.

Watch the video below to learn how I made the card.

Cardbase: I made a side-fold A2 cardbase by folding a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2-inch rectangle in half and stenciled the front on a separate panel. The tiny gold gems where glued on as the last decoration.

Sentiments: The banner sentiments were made using the Spellbinders BetterPress letterpress system and Cheers to You press plates and dies. The inside of the card is blank for a personal message.

Envelope: Envelope flap was stenciled with the same stencil and inks.

Here are two more cards I made at the same time using the same inks and stencil sets, but different BetterPress press plate – Mistletoe Greetings. (“Merry everything” sentiment inside is from Scrapbook and Cards Today’s Jolly Holiday workshop kit.)

Sewing Just For You

Today’s card is a simple one using Spellbinder’s BetterPress to create letterpress stamping elements.

I used press plates from two companies. The intricate zig-zag frames are from PinkFresh Studio and come with coordinating dies. I used the largest two printed frames in the set using Spellbinders BetterPress Ink in French Blue. (I ended up having to use bubble wrap packaging to get a good die-cut through the thick white watercolor paper that I printed them on.)

The sewing themed piece of thread card, scissors and thimble (on card back) came from the Spellbinders BetterPress of the month club for April 2024 – Stitched for You stamped in Tawny Brown ink on gray Spellbinders BetterPress Cotton Card Panel. The circle sentiment is another Spellbinder press plate and die set – Sealed Cord & Faux Seal Sentiments printed Spellbinders white cotton card panel with the same brown ink.

For the cardbase I used a purchased one with envelope from American Crafts. Stamped on the back flap of the envelope is a pincushion image from Fun Stampers Journey using Stampin’ Up Crumb Cake ink.

Art Deco Foiling and Stenciling

Coordinating sets make crafting easy. PinkFresh’s Art Deco hot foiling plate and coordinating three stencils set make it easy to create a variety of backgrounds for card fronts. I was influenced by Jennifer McGuire’s video on using a similar PinkFresh foiling plate and stencils.

I hot foiled three backgrounds making two foiled lines and one solid foil using the foil leftover. (I accidentally foiled my solid hot foiling plate with the second solid foil piece. Make sure the foil has the backing side next to the paper, not the foiling plate!)

Using the three stencils I did two versions of coloring in the shapes on the foil lines backgrounds. On one background I took the stencil with mostly triangles and used the Citrine ink for the smaller triangles and the Sunbeam ink for the larger shapes. The nenext stencil I used the Poppy Red ink for all the shapes and left the remaining shapes white.  For the second colored background, I used a different colored ink for each of the three stencils. Because the Citrine and Sunbeam inks are only one shade different, I feel like the background with the white shapes is more interesting.

For the two “Thanks” cards, I glued the backgrounds directly to the card bases. Next, I cut four of the circle Thanks from white scrap cardstock and glued three of the die-cuts together. The single layer thanks, I glued to the colored background, while the foiled background received the layered die-cut.

The “Hello” card uses a black foiled sentiment from a Spellbinder’s frames and sentiment set. The sentiment and the inked background are adhered with foam squares. To add more interest, I glued tiny gold flatback gemstones from my stash. (I think they may have been in an advent calendar from Craftstash or Crafter’s Companion.) (A sticky tip tool is great for adding small elements like these gemstones to your projects.)

Because I used A7 sized card bases (5 x 7 inches), I needed to trim the bases down for the 5 ¼ x 4 inches foiled backgrounds.
