Junk Journal Folio Pop-Up Card

Wanting to make a project with the Graphic 45 Curiouser & Curiouser paper collection, I used the new Karen Burniston Photo Gallery Pop-Up die set along with her previously released Waterfall Card dies to make this Alice in Wonderland themed junk journal folio card.

Cardbase: (Watch the video above for assembly instructions.) Cut a 5×12-inch rectangle from double-sided cardstock. Cut another rectangle at 5×7 1/4-inches from the same cardstock. Score both pieces at 6 7/8-inches. Glue tab of short piece to long piece on the 7-inch side to form a 19-inches long trifold cardbase.

Waterfall Card Front: (Watch the video above for assembly instructions.) on the 5×12-inches cardbase piece, using the half-circle die in the Waterfall Card set, cut the thumb hole in the center of the fold. Cut the waterfall pull strip and base piece from the same patterned cardstock, train the folds and glue the smiley face tabs together. Centering the pull strip over the thumb hole, staple the base piece in place at the bottom corners.Cut four images from the double-sided papers so that they are 2 3/4-inches tall and less than 4-inches wide. Glue images to waterfall base as shown in the video. Attach the “pull” arrow rectangle die cut from the Waterfall Card set to the end of the pull strip.

Pocket Tags: Cut one or two images to be tags for the second cardbase panel (My images are 3 3/4×5-inches and 3 3/4×5 1/2-inches.) Punch holes and thread through ribbon as pull strings. Cut and decorate a 2 1/5×4 3/4-inch piece of the same cardstock as the cardbase and glue on three sides to make the tags’ pocket.

Photo Gallery Pop-Up: (Watch the video above for assembly instructions.) Using the Photo Gallery Pop-Up die set, cut two of the large gallery pieces matching the direction of the pattern paper so that when glued together the pattern is all going the same way. Cut the two triangle tabs from the same paper as the cardbase. Cut one of the smaller galley piece. From the patterned paper cut enough images to fit the two gallery pieces. (Note that many of my images stick up over the top edge of the gallery pieces.) Attach the gallery pieces as shown in the video above. Decorate the cardbase with extra images taking care to not cover folds or create catchpoints.

Envelope: This junk journal folio card fits into an A7 (5×7-inches) envelope.

Nutcrackers: Using PhotoPlay’s Nutcrackers Layered die set, create your nutcrackers as shown on packaging or create your own uniforms and hair styles.

Pop-Out Birthday Tag Card

This card was made for Craft Roulette #265 whose parameters included gift card, train colors, science element, and add a flower. I used a Craft Roulette stamp set and three Karen Burniston dies die sets.

Cardbase:  Using Karen Burniston’s Tag Book Pop-Up die set, I cut two of the large tag frames from oxidized blue mirror cardstock and two more from oxidized copper-colored mirror cardstock. The rectangular hinge die I cut once from white cardstock.

Pop-Up Panels: I glued my thin decorated paper to a piece of thin white cardstock and let dry before cutting out the Flower Pivot Panels piece. (Follow the assembly instructions in her video on the die set’s linked page.) The six small flowers are cut from solid colored cardstock scraps using the dies from the same die set as the panels.

Sentiments:   The framed “Happy Birthday” on the tag front is from the Happy Birthday Lorna Add-Ons die set. The stamped “itty bitty gift” on the back tag pocket is in brown ink using the Craft Roulette Funn Sentiments #01 stamp set.

Envelope:  The card fits into a purchased A6 (4.5x 6-inches) size envelope or larger.

A Pop-Up Tag Card with a Nautical Theme

This card was made for Craft Roulette #248 whose parameters included a tag(s) , Disney colors, January element, and branch (es) or (ing). I used a Craft Roulette stamp set and two Karen Burniston dies die sets.

Cardbase:  Using Karen Burniston’s Tag Book Pop-Up die set, I cut two of the large tag frames from heavy weight light blue cardstock and two more from darker blue lightweight cardstock. The rectangular hinge die I cut once from light blue cardstock. The dark blue pieces I trimmed a 1/16-inch off all edges and then glued the dark blue on top of the light blue. The hinge was glued onto the inside of the light blue panels. (Watch Karen’s assembly video for her Tag Book Pop-Up.) You can cut two of the large tags from patterned paper to cover over the hinge on the inside. (It is easier to do the patterned paper background now than after you’ve glued in the yellow pop-up piece as I show in the process video above.) There are a number of decorator dies that come in the Tag Book Pop-Up Set such as the chain rope and hole protectors.

Pop-Up Panels: Cut two of the inside die piece from lightweight yellow cardstock. Cut two sets of the decorating strips die from dark blue. Follow the assembly instructions in her video.

Nautical Elements: The nautical elements of a ship, life preserver, anchor and ship’s wheel are all die cut and stenciled using dies from Karen Burniston’s Cruse Charms. (You can watch Karen’s assembly video for these charms at the bottom of this linked page Cruse Charms.) The chain rope borders and dark blue background mats are all dies in the Tag Book Pop-Up die set. The tags have red and white baker’s twine tied to them.

Sentiments:   The “Happy Birthday” and HBD sign are stamps in the Craft Roulette Funn Friend #1 stamp set. The “HBD” letters and yellow shade were cut using the stamp set’s coordinating dies.

Envelope:  The card fits into a purchased A6 (4.5x 6-inches) size envelope or larger.

Tag Birthday Card

This tag birthday card was made for Craft Roulette #197 whose parameters included a card with two tags, happy colors, nail(s) and “outside the line.”

I followed the directions on Karen Burniston’s assembly video for making this Circle Tag Book Pop-Up (which is on the bottom of the linked page for this die set.)

The Nuvo Dream Drops that I used were fairly easy to apply as finger nails on the hands that were die-cut using a set by Karin Joan’s Missees collection.

For sentiments, I used Karen Burniston’s Happy Birthday with its shadow cut from a holographic pink paper. I added heart hands cut from the same die set as the inside hands. The back white label is a place for a personal message. A gift card could be tucked inside for a manicure.

Beautiful holiday papers inspired this gift card holder/Christmas card.

It uses two of the new die sets in Karen Burniston’s December 2023 release – Mini Gift Bag and Topper Tags.

Cardbase: Cut two tags using the largest die in the topper tags set from decorative paper. From the same double-sided paper cut a strip 5×1/2-inch and fold lengthwise in half for the card hinge. Glue the hinge to the tag edges to form the inside of the card. Tie ribbon through the tag hole on each side of the card.

Gift Bag: Plan out what images you want to see on the mini gift bag when it is attached. Center the larger of the two bag dies using the square opening over your desired image making sure the top flat die edge with holes is at the top of your image. (I have a few upside-down paper bags in my stash.) Assemble bag as shown on the packaging. Glue the flat side of the bag to the inside of the card. Add the ribbon handle by threading ribbon through the holes and knotting it inside the bag.

Sentiments: The main sentiments of “Merry & Bright,” “Merry Christmas,” and “Warm Wishes” are all on the decorative cardstock. The white tag label inside for a personal message is cut from smallest tag in the tag set and uses the heart hole protector also in the set.

Envelope: The tag card easily fits into a #10 business envelope.

Celebrating A 9th Birthday

Growing a year older should be celebrated. This show-stopper card is for a 9-year-old.

For this card I used two new dies from Karen Burniston’s December 2023 release – Birthday Candle Add-Ons and the Topper Tags – as well as her Fancy Label Accordion, Fancy Winter Frames, and a few other previously released die sets to decorate.

Before starting, watch assembly videos for the linked die sets. The videos are towards the bottom of the linked pages.

Accordion Frames: Cut four accordion frames using the Fancy Label Accordion die set. They will be decorated AND THEN assembled. It is much harder to decorate a fully assembled accordion card when you cannot flatten the various moving panels and frames. (I assembled this card as I would normally, but the candle and heart add-ons are designed to be assembled with with the accordion frame behind the add-on panel and not as I did by putting the frame’s center post in front of the panel.)

Candles Add-Ons: The Birthday Candles Add-On cut a pivot panel that attaches to two Fancy Label Accordion panels. It also has dies to cut and stencil four candles and their flames. Cut one candle panel from a solid color cardstock. Cut another from decorative paper. Train the folds on the solid color panel as directed on the packaging. Using the largest decorator label from the Fancy Label Accordion set, cut a frame from the decorative paper. (The section between the two label cut outs will fall out and the frame can be cut down the center fold.) Glue the frame onto the panel matching up the edges.

Assemble and decorate the candles using the die stenciling feature or use decorative papers. (Because I needed to celebrate a 9-year-old’s birthday, I did not use all twelve candles that the panel will hold. I decided to add a number 9 as another candle by cutting a “9” using the Numbers die set and cut the top of a candle with the flame attached to the back top of the number.) The flames I cut from a background paper I had made using glitter ink and drew the black burnt wick onto them.

Once the panel is fully decorated, work on the accordion frames that it will be glued onto. Glue two frames together using the outer long tab. From one panel cut the label panel along the pivot point making sure to keep the label attached to the pivot bar. Cut the other label, but the cut will look different than the other panel. See photo below. Add glue to the back side of the candle panel and attach it to one of the label panels. Add glue to the other end of the candle panel and attach it to the other label panel. (See 2nd photo under tags for what the back side of the attached candles panel into the accordion frames.)

Tags: Cut two tags using the second from the smallest tag die in the Topper Tags. (If your paper is a single-sided decorative paper like mine was, cut two more tags that cover at least the part of the tag that will not be covered by the fancy label panel. Glue the tags together as shown in the photo below.) Attach the back of the tags to the fancy label panels on their backsides.

Decorations: The Birthday Charms die set are used for balloons, party hats and cupcake. Three colors of bakers twine are used for the balloon strings and for tag ties. A thin black pen was used to draw the balloon strings onto card back. The frame borders are cut from white copier paper backed with a wide double-sided tape using the polka-dot frame die from the Fancy Winter Frames.

Once the frame borders are adhered, attach the end accordion frames to the candle frames. Add balloons to the folds and then glue the fancy labels together.

Sentiments: Add the sentiments once the accordion frames and fancy labels are all attached together. “Happy Birthday” uses two dies – Happy Birthday Shadow and Happy Birthday. “Just for You” uses three die sets – Word Set 15, Word Set 8 and Mini Alphabet. The “You” is cut from a phrase die and its shadow is created by tracing the outside of the die and fussy cutting. (You could use other word dies for the “You.”)

Envelope: The closed card fits into an A7 (5×7-inch) envelope.

Festive Foliage and Hearts – Tags

“The holidays are a time to open our hearts” is the sentiment that these festive gift tags have.  These tags were stamped with the Alte New stamp set Festive Foliage which allows you to stamp a fir tree with two to four colors. There is a heat in the center of the tree foliage.

I stamped these tags from a scrap piece of heavy white cardstock 5 ½ inches x 3 inches using a stamping platform so that I could position the stamps once and turn the card to stamp a second image. The stamps are labeled tree 1, tree 2, heart1, and heart 2. I used a different green ink for each stamp. The tree is Pear Pizzazz and Tranquil Tide, and the heart is Lemon Lime and Emerald Envy. Two tiny heart stamps from my stash are stamped over the foliage. The smallest and most solid heart stamp was stamped with VersaMark-Watermark ink and heat embossed with a gold embossing powder as was the sentiment. The outline stamp is inked with Real Red.

Using a hole punch at the top of the tree I was able to add some red organza ribbon to finish the tag.
