Hoppin’ Poppin’ Bunnies

Inspired by someone who loves bunnies, I made this free-standing pop-up birthday card. I used some dies by i-crafter which sadly is no longer making new products. You can still find some of their dies on ebay, esty and a few on-line stores. Hoping that the designer of these dies – Lynda Kanase will find a new company to work with to produce this fun Box Pops-Oval Base once again.

Bunnies and Grass:  Cut three of the bunnies die from the Box Pops Easter, Add-on set from white and four of the small grass die in white. Cut two pop-up strips from the Box Pops-Oval Base set and trim off tab on each piece. Color the grass on all pieces and tops of pop-up strips with a green alcohol marker. Glue the three bunny piece together. Glue to one side of oval base before glue the base altogether.

Oval Pop-Up Stand:  Cut the main die in the Box Pops-Oval Base twice from heavy patterned cardstock. Follow assembly directions in video. Glue two grass strips to each pop-up strip to form a “T” shape. Place a pop-up strip into slot in oval base and fold tab where it meets the base bottom. Glue in in place. (I added a 1×4.5-inch strip of white to the back for a personal message.)

Sentiments:  “Happy Birthday” was cut twice – once from coral and once from white cardstock using Firefly dies The white was off-set slightly as the bottom layer when the two colors were glued together. The words were brushed with a glitter gloss to make them sparkle.

Envelope: The card fits into an A2 (4.25x 5.5-inches) size envelope. I stamped a bunny holding a heart with the words “Especially for you” on the back envelope flap.

Bunny Mug

I got this cute bunny mug die set on sale after Easter from Teaspoon of Fun. This Pixi Dust Designs die set has 22 dies to make the bunny face mug, a carrot, a cake slice and a macaroon.

Cardbase: Use an A2 (4 1/4 x 5 1/2-inches) side-fold horizontal card base (I used a purchased kraft cardbase and matching envelope.) cover the four panels with double-sided papers.

Bunny Mug: Cut the mug, large ears, eyes, cheeks and teeth from white cardstock. Cut nose and two inner ear piece from pink. From black, cut inner eye and eyelash circles. Use a pale-yellow ink to color teeth. Glue pieces together. With a fine-tipped black pen, add dots for whiskers on cheeks Also use black pen to outline cheeks, teeth and mug shape. Glue mug to card front and trim away cardbase around top half of mug.

Carrot: Cut the two carrot dies from different shades of orange. And the carrot top from green. Assemble with whole carrot piece on the bottom and then the carrot piece with three vs and top off with carrot greens. Use a fine-tipped black pen to add fine lines to add rounded shaping to the carrot and greens. Make two carrots.

Carrot Cake: Cut cake from brown and three icing pieces and thin oval from white.  Lightly shade the icing piece with a pale-yellow ink. Add orange dots to brown cake piece. Glue the two ripple lines first using makes on cake piece and then attach the top icing piece.

Sentiment: Cut from white the “Happy Easter” words in the Karen Burniston Easter Charms. Cut the smaller fancy label from the Crosshatch Rectangles and Labels die set from pink for a personal message label.

Envelope: Glue second carrot to the back flap of the envelope.

How Does the Easter Bunny Do It All?

Welcome to our Karen Burniston Products – KB Riley LLC February 2024 Release Blog Hop. The Design Team have come together with Karen today for a fun blog hop to celebrate the release of 12 new dies. Ever wonder how the Easter Bunny gets all those eggs prepared to hide? He uses gnomes of course!

This card uses five of the new release die sets including: Happy Easter, Easter Borders, Animal Add-ons 5, Baking Borders and Kitchen Borders as well as eight previously released die sets by Karen Burniston.

Instructions for how I created this 5×7-inch card with the gnome kitchen are in video above. The card front instructions are in written format only and are below the video. (Sorry I had a camera malfunction.)

Card Front:  To create the scene within the oval frame, I first had to create the scene by gluing the tree, basket and bunny to a strip of grass from the new Easter Borders set. (See assembly videos for tree and bunny on the bottom of their linked pages.)

Next I glued six grassing strips, plus the waste sections between the strip cutouts to form a grassy lawn. The second basket was glued in on a different layer than the bunny.

The oval frame was cut using the two largest dies in the Ovals – Crosshatch set. The scene was glued to the back of the frame and excess bits were trimmed off the oval.

Sentiments: For the card front sentiment of “How does he do it” I cut individual letters from black using the Mini Alphabet and Numbers set. For the “Happy Easter” I cut the shadow from white and the words from yellow cardstock using the new die set Happy Easter. I brushed a coat of glitter gloss over this sentiment to add some magic to the scene.

Bunny Bookmark Pop-Up Easter Card

It’s Sneak Peek Week for Karen Burniston’s February 2024 release. These dies will be available for purchase on February 19, 2024 on the KB Riley LLC website.

Inspired by a bookmark card I recently made, I decided to make a bunny bookmark slimline card using Karen Burniston’s new Animal Add-ons 5, Easter Borders, and Happy Easter.

Cardbase: Start with a 7.25×8.75-inch rectangle of heavy white cardstock and fold to create a slimline card that is slightly larger than 3.5×8.5-inches. (I folded my cardbase crooked and had to even up the sides by trimming off some.) Using decorative Easter papers cover the front and back of the card with full sheets. Use scraps to cover the top and bottom of the inside of the card. Make sure to leave a gap where the card fold is in the inside papers.

Bunny Bookmark: Cut a 2×5-inch rectangle from heavy white cardstock. Round corners with a corner punch. Using the Animal Add-ons 5 set, cut the two large ears, two large oval eyes, one double circle piece, one split square teeth piece, one wavy circle tail piece and four arm pieces from white cardstock. Cut two smaller ear pieces and one triangular nose piece from pink. Cut two smaller eye pieces from black. Using a white gel pen use stencil feature to add white highlight to black portion of eyes. With a fine-tipped black pen add three dots to double circle piece for whiskers. Add three small lines to each paw for nails. Ink the edges of the teeth piece very lightly with a pale yellow ink. Assemble the face of bunny using package picture as a guide onto the top of the rectangle. Glue ears to back of rectangle and arms and hind legs to front of rectangle. (Hint: glue the hind legs to bottom corners of rectangle then glue tail to back side just above the hind leg. Then glue arms so that the paw is just above top of tail.)

Basket Pocket: (Follow directions in assembly video at bottom of linked page.) Make one Wide Woven Basket Box Card panel from brown. Ink the slat pieces with brown ink before weaving into main basket piece and glue in place. Trim off tab. Cut from green cardstock a grassy strip and glue to back side of basket top. Using thin strips of foam tape on the bottom and sides of basket panel, attach to card front to form a pocket. Insert bunny bookmark.

Raising Platform: (Follow directions in assembly video at bottom of linked page the Raising Platform Pop-Up.) Cut one mechanism piece from double-sided decorative cardstock. (I used a carrot and bunny print.) Assemble onto a flattened cardbase. Cut one of the largest fancy label from white cardstock and fold in half. Glue on sentiment. Train the fold with the sentiment. Attach sentiment label to mechanism.

Decorations: Cut two egg borders from Easter Borders set using two different colors of cardstock. Cut two sets of decorative eggs from the same set in a darker color. Trim egg border to width of card and use left over eggs to decorate egg borders along with decorative eggs. Glue to finished borders to bottom and top of card front. Add any extra eggs to basket grass.

Cut two more grass strips from Wide Woven Basket Box Card set and glue to cardbase above bottom decorative paper inside card. Decorate with eggs and basket from the Animal Add-ons 5 set. Cut two of the carrot borders from the Easter Borders set from orange and two sets of carrot tops from green. Assemble carrots using a Quickstik tool or tweezers. Glue carrots to base of carrot paper inside card. (I had to cut the carrot border to cover the edge aesthetically.) Glue extra carrots to the sentiment label. (I cut some carrots from my decorative paper for the label.)

Sentiment: Using the new Happy Easter set, I cut the shadow from pink and the words from blue then cardstock since they are going on top of the platform label and being folded in half. The large “Just” with shadow is from Word Set 15 – Just Because. I had to do minor word surgery using Word Set 4 – Just A Note taking the “H” from “Hooray” and replacing the first “p” in “popping” with it to make “Hopping.” The word “by” comes from words in both word sets. “to say” is from Word Set 4.

Envelope: #10 business envelope back flaps are perfect to use border dies on. I cut the hopping rabbits and grass borders from the Easter Borders set and used fine-tipped pens to add the eyes and noses on the rabbits.

Easter Candy Boxes

Little candy treat boxes left by the Easter Bunny make the child in all of us smile.  

For these fun boxes I used the Candy Hearts Box in the December 2023 release by Karen Burniston.

The box is cut in one piece. (I used patterned paper which the striped paper had a white backside while the egg paper had stripes inside.) Before assembling, cut out the window with the square or hearts decorator dies in the set and back it with a scrap of clear acetate or plastic packaging. Then, adhere a contrasting frame cut with the same dies. Thin double-sided tape works well to adhere the plastic the inside of the box and for the long side tab, but glue will work as well.

I used stickers from the paper collection as well as “Happy” and the bunny from Word Set 2 and Spring Animals to decorate the boxes.

Easter Bunny Accordion Style

I’ve been experimenting with taking Karen Burniston’s Landscape Rectangle Accordion and cutting the pivot panel into a smaller string of shapes. For this card I used dies from her crosshatch circle and oval sets.

I made a template from heavy cardstock (110 lb) by first cutting a panel and then tracing around the dies to create a pattern. For the pattern, I used the second smallest oval for the center and the two smallest circles. (Make sure you don’t cut away the pivot mechanism at the top and bottom of the panel. The center point of the rectangle is the scored fold-line.) I fussy cut the pattern and then used it to trace onto my die-cut panels of double-sided medium-weight, patterned cardstock.

Now for the fun part – deciding what decorations to add. I pulled all my Easter and Spring dies out and tired various layouts to see what would fit.

after deciding to add a frame to dangle a charm from, I used the smallest crosshatch oval to die-cut the opening. Because the frame top was so thin, I used a needle and thread to create a string to dangle an egg charm. (The charm is made from two charms glued together.) The knotted thread ends were finished with dots of glue. (In hindsight, I would probably make the opening with a smaller circle so that the frame would be wider near the pivot points. See below, photos of another card that I cut a circle aperture.)

For the sentiment (in the Easter Charms Set), I traced around the outside of the die and fussy out to create a shadow for the words. I cut two of the sentiment and glued them together before attaching them to the shadow. To add some pizazz to words, I coated it with a glitter gloss and popped it up on foam squares over the flowers.

The flowers come from two different die sets, but the flowers are all the same. (This makes for quicker die-cutting when you two of the same die.) I find putting two flowers of similar colors together you get a fuller, more pleasing flower. I shaped my flowers using my fingers to curl the petal ends down while pushing the flower center down as well.

I mostly followed the packaging examples for the eggs, bunnies and chicks, but you can view the assembly video for the Easter Charms. I coated the chocolate bunny with a glossy clear gel after I had used the die to ink in the bunny’s eye with a white gel pen. I also added a tiny red grosgrain ribbon at his neck. For the Easter Bunny, I used a grey suede paper so he was fuzzy to the touch. (Here is the assembly video for the Spring Animals.)

After all the panels were decorated, I attached the frames and panels using there tabs as directed in their assembly video.

As you plan where your decorations will go, think about how thick they will be, if they will be attached using foam squares and if they will become catchpoints for the pivot mechanism or folds where the panels are joined. (I popped up a purple flower at an inside fold that some of the petals ended up creased and folded back.) I chose to keep the middle section as flat as I could, only popping up items on the outside panels/last panel.

The front panel introduces the Easter bunny theme while the back panel has a matted label popped up on foam squares for a personal message.

The card folds to fit into an A6 (4×6 inches) or larger envelope. It may require extra postage because of its thickness to post in the USA.

Below are photos of a similar string accordion card using the same papers, but with a religious theme and a circle aperture rather than an oval aperture in the center panel.

It’s time for the Karen Burniston April 2023 Design Team Challenge with the theme of BUNNIES.

Ever wonder where chocolate bunnies come from? A chocolate bunny farm – of course!

This is a fun, tongue in cheek sort of card using Karen Burniston’s Barn Pop-Up Stand, Easter Charms, Farm Edges, a Bam Box and a fancy label from the Rectangles and Labels – Crosshatch die sets. My inspiration comes from the Echo Park papers and sentiments, chocolate adverts and the on-going tradition in the Sally Worth comic strip where the mother always eats the daughter’s chocolate bunny ears before the daughter has a chance to unwrap the bunny.

I recommend watching the assembly video for the barn pop-up before starting. My woodgrain paper was only one-sided, so I cut four barns and glued two together for woodgrain inside and out. (Because I had limited woodgrain paper, I had to piece together the backside of the barn front before cutting the door openings into it.) I also cut two fences from the Farm Edges die set which were folded in half and one fence post trimmed off each side to make them fit inside the card when glued to the inside of the barn.

After laying out the placement of the white bunnies on green grass paper, I used clear removable tape to hold them together when I die-cut them for the pop-up stand tabs. Make sure you get your die perfectly centered over the fold line. (I was just a little off-kilter on my die placement and this messed-up the right front tab that attaches to the barn back. You can see this pink tab poking through on a few of the photos. I ended-up cutting off the tab as the other three tabs where functioning.)

For the chocolate bunnies, I cut seven from brown cardstock using the bunny die in the Easter Charms. The die has a stencil hole for marking the eye with a white gel pen.

Two chocolate bunnies are on the front of the card surrounding the “Cottontail Farms – Every Bunny Welcome” sign. Another two chocolate bunnies are in the fenced in paddocks by the barn inside, while a third bunny is loose in the yard popped-up on a Bam Box with a piece of grass from the barn die set. The sixth chocolate bunny is on the back of the card with one of its ears having been nibbled on.

Decorating touches include carrot ribbon that wrapped about the card base on the front and back with the ends covered on the inside with a sentiment “I’m just here for the chocolate bunny” and a white fancy label for a personal message.

The last bunny is on the envelope flap with a pink ribbon and carrots fussy cut from extra cardbase paper. I like to enclose instructions on how to close the Bam Box. You can download the instructions below.

This card is my second go at using the Spellbinders Spring Collection add-on dies for the Sunday Drive die set that makes a detailed classic convertible car. On this card I went with an Easter Bunny theme complete with colored eggs.

I used a tulip embossing folder from a recent issue of Simply Cards and Papercraft magazine for the background. It took me a number of tries to find the best sandwich pieces to make this embossing folder work. (I ended up using the Glimmer plate, shim and platform to get the right pressure for the embossing folder.) This green background panel was adhered to the white card base using foam tape after it was decorated.

The car goes together as usual except I left off the folded roof layer as you wouldn’t be able to see the baby bunnies.  The adult bunnies have separate arms, heads and body so their poses have lots of possibilities and could be used separately away from the car.  I also added a floral swag with carrots and eggs as well as flowers to the back of the car. For the license plate, I used a white scrap behind the green “Easter” to make it pop and coated Nuvo Glitter Gloss over the plate and the “HAPPY” pendant. The taillights have Nuvo Glow Drops Neon in Shocking Pink for that bit of glow.

A circle the same size as the embossed circle has been inked using a make-up brush and Distress Oxides. It is glued to the green panel.

Once the car was assembled, and a yellow organza ribbon wrapped and taped to the back of the green panel, I used a plastic spring affixed to the back of the car to raise and allow movement for the car.

The “Just for you” sentiment is also from the same Simply Cards and Papercraft free gift set. It is heat embossed and fussy cut. I adhered it with foam squares.

Inside the card, the sentiment is from Riley and Company’s Funnybones series and reads “Everybunny needs somebunny sometimes.” It is stamped on some scrap Hunkydory Christmas insert paper.

The envelope is stamped on the front lower corner and on the back flap with bunnies from the Craft Consortium’s English Garden collection.
