Thanksgiving Pop-Up Room Scene Card

It’s time for the November 2024 Karen Burniston Design Team Challenge of Autumn or Christmas Cheer celebrating the season.

I’ve chosen to celebrate Autumn and Thanksgiving harvest foods with another 6×6-inch pop-up kitchen scene card featuring the new Sweet Treats clear stamp set along with the previously released Oven Pop-Up, Oven Extras, Baking Borders, Explosion Pop-Up and Bitty Ball and Mini Ball Double-Ups die sets.

Cardbase: From 100 lb. cardstock cut two 6 x 6 1/2-inch rectangles, one 6 x12-inch rectangle, and one 6 x 5-inch rectangle. Watch video to see the order of assembly of pieces and when to cover pieces with decorative paper.

Windows: Using the Bitty Ball Double-Ups large die, cut windows into the two 6 x 6 1/2-inch rectangles of the card base. Use the Mini Ball Double-Ups to cut the rear window in the 4 1/2-inch tall wall panel. The door uses the RectanglesCrosshatch and the Long RectanglesCrosshatch as well as the leftover rectangles from the oven rack and black circle from the oven burner in the Oven Pop-Up set.

Oven: Cut two of the Oven Pop-Up base and cut one in half and assemble the base pieces as shown in the tutorial video above. Complete as shown in Karen Burniston’s assembly video. (Watch assembly video on the dies’ linked page.)

Cabinets: Cut eight of the cabinet doors from the Oven Extras set. (Watch assembly video on the dies’ linked page.) Add to the scene as shown in the tutorial video above. The double cabinet counter tops are cut using the second smallest rectangle in the Short Rectangles-Crosshatch. (While the tutorial video shows using the Explosion Pop-Up for the base of the island cabinets, you could just use a cut down oven base for this island.)

Decorations: The pies come from the Baking Borders set while the oven mitts are from the Oven Pop-Up set. The turkey in the roasting pan in the oven as well as the orange pot on the stove are from the Oven Extras set as is the pop-up cubes that animate them as the card opens. The pumpkins and leaves on the outside panels are from the Autumn Elements set.

Sentiments: The card uses two sentiments from an American Crafts journaling card paper sheet as well as the Sweet Treats stamped sentiments. Die-cut “Happy Thanksgiving” and “Welcome Autumn” come from Word Set 7- Autumn.

Envelope:  The card is thick, so a special padded envelope is needed to mail it.

Happy 4th of July Card

Fourth of July picnics often involve desserts with blueberries and strawberries since they are in season. This card evokes a family gather with home baked pies.

I used the new Papertrey Ink – Picnic Time die set to create these pies. I used red bases covered with a red glitter brush marker (Scrapbook.com.) The crusts were cut from light kraft cardstock and inked brown or tinted blue (Distress Ink – Vintage Photo and Prize Ribbon.) The blueberries are cut from blue cardstock. The pies are attached with thin foam squares.

The background decorative papers are by Bo Bunny – Celebrating Freedom. I used a purchased cardbase and envelope from Park Lane Paperie in an A6 size. The star buttons are from HoneyBee Stamps.

The sentiment is one I created on Canva.com and sized to my needs. it is attached with thick and thin foam dots. Decorative paper strips adorn the envelope flap.

Baking For The Holidays

It’s time for the Karen Burniston June 2024 Design Team Challenge with the theme of using border dies.

I wanted to get a jump on my end-of-the-year holiday cards by making a baking themed card with pies and gingerbread men from the Baking Borders and Christmas Borders 1 set. The rolling pin and chef’s hat are also in the Baking Borders set. Additional die sets used were:  Oven Pop-Up, Tiny Gnomes, and the Fancy Label Accordion. (A 1 3/4-inch square die was used from the Frame Pull Pop-Up set, but any 1 3/4-inch square die could be used. This was the one I had handy.)

Cardbase: Cut three of the largest die in the Fancy Label Accordion set from a butterscotch-colored heavy cardstock. Work the scored fold-lines.  Wait to until after making and attaching the oven shaker to glue the frames together.

Shaker Oven: Cut ten ovens from red cardstock and two additional ovens from coated red cardstock using the oven die from the Oven Pop-Up set. Trim off stove top section on all 12 pieces. From the two coated cardstock stove top pieces, trim off the back where knobs go and save. Layout oven with stove back on one panel of the cardbase. Mark the outside edges of oven lightly with pencil. Center 1 3/4-inch square die within the oven square and die cut. (You may want to use a ruler to find the center of the fancy label and center the die left to right with the center line. The die will be below the true center up and down because of the stove back piece.)

Glue five of the plain cardstock oven pieces to either side of the cardbase over the square opening. This will form the shaker base. Cut two 2-inch square pieces of clear acetate/plastic.  Attach one piece of acetate/plastic with double-sided tape to the top of stacked oven pieces. Turn over and fill shaker with confetti and tiny cookie shapes from the Oven Pop-Up set. Attach the second piece of acetate/plastic with double-sided tape to seal up the oven shaker.

Cut two 1 1/2-inch square pieces of clear acetate/plastic. Adhere to the back of oven doors on the remaining two coated oven pieces using double-sided tape. With more double-sided tape added to the outer edges of the oven pieces, attach them over the shaker acetate/plastic. Glue the stove back with knobs attached to the cardbase above the ovens on both sides.

Pies, Gingerbread Men and Rolling Pins: Cut two strips of pie bases from the Baking Borders set. Color one strip all red .(I used a red glitter brush.) Color four orange and four baked apple yellow on the other strip. Cut out four of each of the pie tops. Ink the pie top to look like browned crusts with maybe some burnt tips of the crusts. Glue lattice pie crust to apple yellow pies, the open ring crust onto the pumpkin orange pies and the flower shaped crusts onto the red pies. Cut all the pies into separate circular pieces. Glue pies to the top and bottom of the front and back panel frames of the card base.

Cut two strips of gingerbread men using the die in the Christmas Borders 1 set. Using a white gel pen with a fine tip, trace the icing onto the men using the stencil feature of the die. Cut men apart and glue to sides of the front and back panel frames of the card base.

Cut two strips of the rolling pins from a kraft colored cardstock using the die from the Baking Borders set. With a red fine-tipped marker stencil on the hearts and color all the handles. Trim the strips to fit the top and bottom of the middle panel frame. Save one of the leftover rolling pins for the chef to hold.

Chef: From the Tiny Gnomes set, cut two of the body piece and one mustache from white cardstock. From flesh colored cardstock cut the head, nose and hands. From black cardstock cut the shoes. With a fine tipped pen, trace the eyes using the stencil feature of the head die. Color the mustache brown or gray. Cut one chef’s hat from white using the die in the Baking Borders set. Using the rolling pin die to stencil a red heart onto the chef’s hat.

To assemble, cut one body piece to have an apron in the center and an arm on either side. (See video for visuals of this.) Glue apron onto other body piece and then head. Added mustache then nose to head. Glue arms onto back of body wide enough to hold a rolling pin. Glue rolling pin to end of arms and then add hands on top of rolling pin handles. Attach shoes and hat.

Sentiments: “Happy Holidays” comes from Word Set 3-Holidays. The labels behind it and the chef are from the decorator dies in the Fancy Label Accordion set. Personal messages can be written on the back of the panels.

Envelope: The card fits into an A7 size envelope decorated with leftover pies and rolling pins on the back flap.

A Summer Fete Card

It’s time for the Karen Burniston April 2024 Design Team Challenge with the theme of Thirst Quencher. I chose lemonade as my thirst quencher and a card theme of a summer fete (festival or fair).

At a fete, there are generally small booths selling baked goods, drinks and other trinkets or handicrafts, so my card is a slimline (3 3/4 x 8 1/2-inch) card with three food booths using Karen Burniston dies.

Cardbase: Start with an 8 1/2 x 7 1/2-inch rectangle of a thick cardstock. (I used white.) Score at 3 1/2-inches and fold in half to create a top-fold 3 3/4 x 8 1/2-inch card base.

Booths: Cut three 6×3-inch panels of striped paper. (If you have longer than 6-inch striped paper cut them 7 1/2×3-inches.) Score and fold each panel at 3 3/4-inches. Using the pop-up center die from the Explosion Pop-Up, center the die on the fold of each panel.  Train the folds as directed in the assembly video for the die set located at the bottom of the linked page. Glue pop-up panels inside card with the long side attaching to the inside top panel.  Cover the bottom panel with grassy patterned paper. (I cut strips of the 6×6-inch patterned paper 1-inch wide to go through the pop-ups and cover over the striped paper.) I used a border print card layer to created the tablecloths on each booth table.

Posts and Banners: The posts are cut from glossy white cardstock using the Street Lantern die with the scrolling arms cut off. The pendant banners are made using the die from the Twist Panel Pop-Up set and threading them onto baker’s twine. The twine was wrapped around the knob top of a post before gluing it in place. (The two ends of twine can be taped to the front of the card to be covered over by the front panel.) The green bows that cover the looped twine on the posts are from the Street Lantern Pop-Up set. (I found it helped with the opening and closing of the card to place a small drop of glue at the top back center of each pendant to keep them from becoming catch-points, but still allowing them some dimension.) I used computer generated “Pies,” Lemonade” and “Cakes” printed on coiper paper and cut out with the banner label from the Lorna Label Pop-Up set.

Card Front: You will need to create a panel to hide the banner twine ends under. Cut a 3 3/4 x 8 1/2-inch of blue cardstock and a 3 3/8x 8 1/4-inch rectangle of dotted printed paper. Glue the dotted paper on top of the blue cardstock with an even border all around. Cut ten fishtailed banners from decorative paper using the die from the Twist Panel Pop-Up set. Cut the letters and shadows to spell out “SUMMER FETE” using the Mini Alphabet die set. Glue the letters onto the shadows and shadows onto the banners being careful not to cover the holes at the top of the banners.

Thread the two words on two separate pieces of twine. Die cut the “Enjoy the” from different colors using the Enjoy The Ride set. Once the placement of the words and banners have been established, tape the banner twine ends to the back of the panel. Glue the words and banners down onto the panel. Attach panel to cardbase front. (I used glue and double-side ½-inch tape.)

Pies: I created four pies using two different die sets. The top view lattice cherry pie and the key lime pie were created using the pie dies in the Baking Borders set. (I brushed the cherry pie red with a red glitter brush pen for some shine.) The horizontal pies were made with the pie die from the Picnic Elements set with the base piece cut from red and the crust cut from brown. All pie crust were inked with a light brown ink. The horizontal pie crusts had their slits inked red with an ultra-fine tipped red marker. I attached the horizontal pies using a foam square and a pop-up cube from a strip of white cardstock. (You could use the pop-up cube from the Oven Extras die set instead of making your own.)

Lemonade: The pitcher and glasses of lemonade were created from clear vellum with yellow cardstock behind. All the pieces were cut using the Picnic Elements die set. The pitcher is adhered to the pop-up base with a foam square and a drop of glue. The glasses are attached to a strip of clear packaging plastic with double sided tape all along the strip. The strip was threaded through the pop-up base and attached to the backside of the pop-up. (I covered the exposed adhesive on the strip with anti-static powder.)

Cakes: For these small cakes, I used the cupcakes in the Baking Borders set. I left the border base layer attached and trimmed off the excess behind the frosting. The bottom row has its center cake glued to the pop-up base while the upper row is attached to a pop-up cube.

Message Labels: The two white scalloped labels inside the card are for a personal message and are cut using the die from the Twist Panel Pop-Up set. (I did two to hide the seams of my patterned paper.)

Envelope: The card will fit into a #10 business size envelope.

Card for Pi Day – March 14th

It’s the Karen Burniston design team challenge for November 2023 with the theme of “What’s Cooking” using the Oven Pop-Up die set. I chose to celebrate Pi Day with apple pie making in my card.

The card uses dies by Karen Burniston including Oven Extras and Oven Pop-Up, Picnic Elements, Tree Fruit, Bam Box Pop-Up, Street Lantern Pop-Up and crosshatch rectangles.

Before starting, I recommend watching the assembly videos of the pop-ups which are usually near the bottom of the linked pages for the various dies used.

Cardbase: I started with two rectangles of heavy weight cardstock one piece 5-inches by 7-inches and the second piece 5-inches by 11-inches, scored and folded at 7-inches. The short panel was glued to the back of the 5×7 rectangle to form an A7 top fold card. (The weight of this extra long tab is used to weigh down the floor of the card when open.)

Card Back

I cut a rectangle of the red and white tablecloth paper using the large crosshatch rectangle in the Rectangle and Labels – Crosshatch die set to cover the card front. Because I cut the front decorative paper on an angle, I had some triangles of the paper left over and so I made a table on the back of the card.

Oven/Stove: I followed the basic way to make the oven and cabinets on the assembly video using the cabinet doors from the oven extra’s set. The black mirror cardstock used for the oven can be hard to get glue to stick to, so I often use double-sided tape to stick on the burners, knobs, and window acetate and Glossy Accents to attach the door handle.

Cabinets: Once the stove is attached, you can add the side cabinets. I cut the cabinets from apple green cardstock and then inked them with a brown ink to age them. The upper cabinets and lower cabinet door fronts are cut using the larger rectangle die in the Oven Extras set and then covered with the small rectangle die pieces. Upper cabinets are attached with foam tape to add some dimension to them. A stove hood was cut from silver cardstock and is hidden mostly behind the small upper middle cabinet.

Table: The table is a combination of Karen Burniston’s pop-up island using a bam box and Sandy Diller’s idea to trim lampposts from the Street Lantern Pop-Up set for the turned table legs. I used the original Bam Box Pop-Up with two of the oven cabinet pieces glued on each side of the bam box. The drawers and knobs are from the Oven Pop-Up set as well.

To make the table legs more stable, I added a piece of wood grain cardstock under the tabletop connecting the two legs as well as a thin strip of clear acetate plastic near the bottom of the legs. Tabletop is the second smallest crosshatch rectangle in Rectangles-Crosshatch set. All tabletop parts are cut from woodgrain embossed cardstock and inked with brown ink to bring out the grain.  (I think if I made this card again, I would use two layers of cardstock for the tabletop and glue the items on to the tabletop before assembling it so the top would lay flat.)

Decorations: Between the two oven sets are lots of fun pieces that add dimension and realism to the pop-up scene. The Oven Pop-Up set includes the oven mitt, stove burners and knobs, oven rack and door handle. The Oven Extras set includes the cutting board and roasting pan that I used to make a small rolling pin, the knife and the green bowl that holds the apple slices. as well as three pop-up cube strips that I used to pop-up the oven rack, pie inside the oven and the items on the counter.

Apple slices are the leftover bits from cutting two burner plates. Pie crust on table was cut freehand and the burner circle die from the Oven Pop-Up set was rubbed to emboss the pie pan and then cut away to show the trimming of the piecrust. Burner circle is silver pie pan under the crust. The baked pies are cut from silver foil cardstock and brown kraft cardstock using the Picnic Elements set. Brown is inked around the edges of pie crust. The red apples are from the Tree Fruit die set.

Card Front

Sentiments: All the sentiments are either stickers, journaling cards or papers from the paper collection Sunflower Market by Carta Bella. The white rug inside the card is place for a personal message and is cut using the base blanket die in the Picnic Elements set.

Envelope: A strip of pie paper is glued to the back flap of the envelope to set the tone for the card inside and are from the paper collection. Two red apples left over from inside the card were also glued on the flap.
