This card was made to celebrate Simon Says Stamp! Stamptember with Riley & Company’s The Dog Life stamp set and coordinating dies. It also uses pop-up dies by Karen Burniston.

Woven Basket: The base of this basket card that can fold flat, is Karen Burniston’s Woven Basket Box Card. The grass inside is also from the same set. For assemble see video above. A black alcohol marker was used on the coated gold cardstock to make the nail heads on the basket frame.

Sentiments: The main sentiment on the card was stamped in black ink and die cut using the coordinating dies in The Dog Life stamp set. It is on the round stem piece from the Bouquet Bits die set. The white fancy label on the basket back is for a personal message and is cut using the fancy label die in the Triple Platform Pop-Up set.

Tree: The tree was cut from some doubled-sided scrap patterned papers using the Tree Pop-Up die set.

World Card Making Day Card

This card was made to celebrate World Card Making Day and Craft Roulette episode #235 whose parameters were: not a single-fold A2 size card, mood board colors, world element and star.

I cased a card I had previously made and posted back on September 30, 2024 changing the patterned papers, scarf/steering wheel colors and adding a star to the plane’s tail. This card uses Simon Says Stamp! Stamptember with Riley & Company’s Fly By stamp set. (The Simon Says Stamp! Fly BY is sold out, but you can use this Riley & Co. Airplane Riley stamp set instead.) It also uses pop-up dies by Karen Burniston.

INSIDE: Plane and banner are interactive because they are on Karen Burniston’s Katherine Label Pop-Ups. The plane moves left and the banner moves right as the card is opened. The window frames on the card front panel were created from dies in Karen Burniston’s Twist Panel Pop-Up.

SENTIMENTS are all from the Riley & Company’s Fly By stamp set. “Flying by to say…Happy Birthday” and “Life is a journey. Enjoy the flight.”

CARD BACK: Signature and Craft Roulette inspired for World Card Making Day stamp with aviator’s cap.

ENVELOPE: Card fits into an A7 5×7-inch envelope stamped with “Your plane awesome: and some clouds.

Happy Meowther’s Day from the Cats

A few times a year, I get commissions from a pair of cats for cards to their humans. For Mother’s Day this year they picked an Anita Jerem illustration of two cats sleeping in bed under a heart dotted comforter. They like to use every year the sentiments from a Simon Says Stamp set Happy Meowther’s Day.

Cardbase: I used a purchased A2 (4 1/4 x 5 1/2-inch) plaid printed cardbase and matching white envelope. The image panel was adhered with double sided tape and the sentiments were stamped directly onto the image panel or cardbase.

Front Panel: The Snoozing Kitties stamp works best with a stamping platform. Because I used StazOn ink a solvent ink, I only got one chance at stamping the complete image. I stamped the image on three separate pieces of cardstock and watercolor paper. Some images were faint in areas, so I filled them in with a 01 black fine tip pen before coloring. I experimented with watercolor brush markers and alcohol markers. I had more control over the intensity of color with the alcohol markers as well as a wider range of colors to choose (80 alcohol markers to 12 watercolor brush markers.) My chosen panel was the first one I colored with alcohol markers. Yellow cat colored with 37 pastel yellow, 38 pale yellow, 163 green bice and 120 black. Gray striped cat used 120 black, WG3 warm grey and WG5 warm grey. The comforter’s hearts were colored with 70 royal blue, 144 pale baby blue and 185 pale blue light. The shadows on the bedding wrinkles is WG1 warm grey. 70 royal blue was also used for the wallpaper stripes, while 185 pale blue light was used for the headboard. “Happy Meowther’s Day” was stamped in black over the wallpaper.

Inside Sentiments: All the sentiments inside the card are from the Happy Meowther’s Day stamp set. They include “Thank you for feeding me, cleaning up after me, and loving me more than anything else in the world. The feeling is mutual.” And “from the cats” with tiny paw prints and a heart. The heart is stamped in red while all the words and paw prints are in black.

Envelope: “Happy Meowther’s Day” is stamped on the back of the envelope flap in black ink with a red heart underneath it.

Hats Off To You!

It’s graduation season and the Craft Roulette Episode 161 gave me the idea for this commissioned card for a high school graduate with the Dutch door cardbase, hats, campfire colors and book page element.

All of the dies used are by Karen Burniston. They include the Heart Collage Pop-Up (for the mechanism), Book Worm and Tiny Accessories 2 (both for graduation caps.) The hands and printed sentiments come from a Simon Says Stamp set called Hats off Grad.

Cardbase: Using a T-ruler and pencil, mark the measurements shown on the photo below on an 8 1/2″ x 11” sheet of heavyweight light blue cardstock. Trim off excess rectangles and then score and fold with metal ruler, scoring tool and Teflon folder. Erase pencil marks. Using a small corner punch, round all six corners.

Hat Mechanism: Watch the assembly videos on the Heart Collage Pop-Up page before die-cutting the mechanism piece from light blue cardstock matching the cardbase. Adhere to top fold as directed in assembly videos. Using a stencil and white ink, stencil clouds over the top inside of card, going over the mechanism. Cut out and assemble a number of graduation caps from Book Worm set (small caps) and from the Tiny Accessories 2 (large caps.)

Money Holder: Take a 3” x 4” piece of white copier paper and score along the short side 1/2″ from the edge.  Score both long sides at 1/4″, 1/2″ and 3/4″. Accordion-style fold the long sides and then fold short side under to form a gusseted pocket. Using a small circle punch, cut a half circle at top of pocket as a finger hold.

Sentiments: The large die-cut sentiments all come from the same Karen Burniston Word Set 8. “Congrats” was cut once from navy blue and once from orange – the high school’s colors. The two phrases were cut from navy blue and then their dies were traced on the outside on orange cardstock and fussy cut to create shadows for the words. The graduate’s name was die-cut using Karen Burniston’s Mini Alphabet set and lined up on card using removable paper tape.

Decorations: The high school logo was printed from the school website on light gray and white cardstock for the front and back of the card. (Because I could not find my Hats Off Grad stamp set, I had to print an image from photos of another card I had made using the stamp set.) The “Finally Done! Hats Off to You!” sentiment was fussy cut along with the hands which were glued to the sentiment before being glued to the card base.  Five hearts and two diplomas were added to the hat mechanism and background die cut from the Tiny Accessories 2 set. The math book on the money holder was die cut from the Book Worm set. The labels for a personal message are from two coordinating sets – Label Charm Pop-Up and Crosshatch Rectangles and Labels.

Envelope: The card fits into an A2 envelope. I like to hint at what’s inside the envelope, so a small graduation cap was glued to the back envelope flap.

A Poppin’ Birthday Card From Cats

A Poppin’ Birthday Card From Cats

Every so often, I get a commission’s from cats for cards for their human family. This card was a birthday card for their cat mom.

My inspiration for the card is from the stamped image on the back of the card by Dominic Phillips called Bad Cats Club which has a preciously stacked set of wooden crates with cats perched on them. (I also drew engineering inspiration from Karen Burniston’s March 4, 2023 virtual class for the stacked cubes.) To recreate this image in a 3D form, I used Karen Burniston’s Surprise Cube Pop-Up and Bam-Box Pop-Up dies and cats cut from paper and washi tape. The card is a gusseted slimline card with string wrapped closure.

Card Base: Because I was using specialty cardstocks that were 5 1/2 x 8 1/2-inches, I cut two 3 3/4 x 8 1/2-inches pieces and one gusset strip of 3/4×8 1/2-inches. The gusset strip was scored and folded lengthwise at 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch. The 1/4-inch tabs on the gusset strip were glued to the long backsides of the bronze metallic piece and woodgrain piece. Next, I worked on the flap closure. The inside of the card base is covered with a wide map pattern washi tape.

Flap: I watched the assembly video for the Long Flap and Closure before I began the flap assembly. A long flap and six spacers were cut from brown cardstock using Karen Burniston’s Long Flap and Closure die set. A decorative flap inset piece was cut from the woodgrain cardstock and another for the inside of the flap from brown cardstock. I used two long brass brads that I had to trim the legs to make them fit the card using metal cutting snips. The star decorative piece under the brads is from the Surprise Cube Pop-Up and pushed up from the cardbase by three spacers glued together. (Remember to think through the assembly of the card so that you have papers to cover over the brad legs. Also remember to add your string before covering the brad legs with a decorative paper.)

Tower of Crates: For the pop-up cubes I watched the Surprise Cube assembly video and Bam Box assembly video before starting. From discussion with Karen Burniston on her Pop-Up Peeps Facebook page, I learned that as long as the cubes would fit into the cardbase when folded flat, you could glue the cubes in any manner. (Let the glue set-up before you test your cube tower opening….I had to glue my tower a few times because I was impatient and the power of three rubber bands was pretty strong.) I cut the decorative woodgrain papers from scraps I had in my stash. The cats were fussy cut from some printed papers in my stash and from some washi tape. The top cat is glued to a Bam Box which is glued to the top cube. (I attached the tower with a brad through the bottom cube and card base, much like you would for a ball pop-up animal that you want to be able to turn.)

Sentiments: I used the Happy Birthday die set by Karen Burniston and the paw prints from the Doghouse Tiny House Add-ons for the inside sentiments. The stamped sentiments outside came from the Bad Cats Club set and a Happy Meowther’s Day set.

This card will be delivered in person, so no envelope was created for it.

A Card For A Cat Mom

I received an unusual commission from two cats who desired a card for their “Mom.” They requested that it show how much they loved her and appreciated how she cared for them.

The Simon Says Stamp “Happy Meother’s Day” stamps and coordinating dies were perfect for this card. Knowing that the cats spend a good part of their day watching the outside world at the living room window, I thought an actual photograph of their neighborhood would work well as the world beyond the window that the cats would be looking at.

All of the stamping and embossing for the card was done first, using clear Versamark ink and a stamping platform.  The sentiment banner and two sets of sitting cats were stamped on scrap cardstock and then heat embossed with a detail black embossing powder. (I stamped two sets of cats in case I didn’t like the way I’d colored or cut them so there would be a back-up set to use.)

Layout the placement of the stamps to be used inside the card on a stamping platform. Stamp the red solid hearts first and heat dry the ink before stamping and embossing each side of the card.

It is easier to work at stamping and embossing just one side of the card at a time. Make sure you use an anti-static tool or powder bag to remove the chance of stray embossing powder remaining on your card.

Cut the front and back decorative papers to fit the 5-inch by 7-inch folded card base.

(I used the scraps from cutting the front panel’s 5×7 bottom mat and 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 top layer to decorate the back panel.) Use a rectangle die to cut out the center of the back mat layer so as to get more mileage out of the paper. (Stamp, emboss and color before gluing on papers.)

Cut two of the window frames using the emboss and cut folder. Fussy cut out the windows. (You can trim the back frame a bit smaller than the front frame.) Cut a piece of acetate to fit the windowpane area and glue using small dots of glue at the cross points of the bottom window frame. Use foam squares to adhere the top window frame to the bottom one.

The cats had been kind enough to supply photos of themselves, so I colored the stamped images to reflect their personalities using watercolor pencils and a water brush. To get the stripes to standout more, I went over the wet blended images with a darker color pencil. (I didn’t have to use my back-up set of images as everything worked out as planned!)

The trick to getting perfect die-cuts of stamped images is to make a template the lets you center the cut-out where you want over the image and then taping with low-tack tape to hold the die in place while you run it through a die-cutting machine. 

Once the decorative papers have been glued to the card base, (stamp, emboss and color before gluing on papers,) add the photo back to the bottom window frame. Place one foam square on the back bottom section of the die-cut cats and two squares at the back of the heads where they will adhere through the window opening to the acetate. Use double foam squares on the back of the sentiment banner.

Stamp the front and back of the envelope using two shades of gray and red ink for the hearts and extra sentiment. (I used a red marker to color the collar and extra sides of the heart.)

Congrats, Grad!

For many graduates of 2020, there were few opportunities to collectively toss their caps in the air and celebrate their accomplishments together.  This card is for the class of 2020!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Hat’s Off Grad stamp and die set along with the Quintuple Slider dies to make an interactive card that has the graduates’ caps moving up and down.

To start, I used a stencil to ink (Salty Ocean) a cloudy background with tiny confetti being stamped in Dapper Denim blue up to just below the bottom of the slider slits (as if the confetti was falling out of the caps.) The bold sentiments were stamped with Versamark ink and heat embossed with gold embossing powder.

Next, I stamped the arms and caps using a black ink (Tuxedo Black) that dries fast and doesn’t bleed if water colored. Using the colors of the graduate’s college, a dark blue, I colored the caps and gowns using watercolor pencils and a thin tipped waterbrush.

Inside the card base I stamped two of the smaller text sentiments included in the set – “The tassel was worth the hassle” and “Good luck on your new adventure” – in Blueberry Bushel blue.

Next, I did all my die cutting of elements using the matching dies, circle arrow and the squarish quintuple slider. On my test card, I had placed the die that cuts the slots into the background card, upside down. So, making sure that I had all the slots lined up at the top end of my background and using the slider die as a guide to know where the position the slot cutting die, I cut the slots. (Watch the assembly video to see how the alignment is done.)

To assemble the slider mechanism, I suggestion watching another assembly video to understand how the slider flaps wrap around the slots and how best to keep the flaps aligned. Once the tiny foam squares (I cut a square in half to fit the slider flaps) are adhered to the flaps, the decorating of the card can begin. (CRX – Don’t forget to add some hint that the slider tab needs to be pulled up by adding a die cut circle arrow which is included in the slider die set.)

I used two shades of blue cardstock to mat the slider mechanism. I found that I needed to cut a circle notch from all layers of the four layers of cardstock. I started by folding back the top of the slider once I had aligned the circle arrow die up on the background top layer and cut the circle out. Next, I took the two blue layers which I had glued together and aligned the top background layer over the blue mats and used a pencil to mark where the circle die should go. Cut these two layers and trim the top of the cut area to make a “U” shaped notch in blue layers. Position the blue mats over the card base and using a pencil to mark and then cut the circle from card base. Adhere the blue layers to card base with double-sided tape. Adhere the top mechanism using foam tape on sides and bottom. Leave top of mechanism layer free so slider can move up and down.

The back flap of the envelope has a diploma stamped in Blueberry Bushel blue to give a hint as to what was inside.
