Watermelon Pop-Up Card

Watermelon Pop-Up Card

Inspired by a new Graphic 45 paper collection – Sunshine On My Mind that features watermelon papers, I created this A2 (4.25×5.5-inches) sized card using Karen Burniston’s Ovals and Heart Collage Pop-Up die sets.

Cardbase: Fold an 8.5 x 5.5-inch rectangle of card stock in half to form a top fold 4.24 x 5.5-inch card (or use a purchased A2 cardbase.) Tape the largest oval die so that the top of the die overhangs the fold. Die cut to form an oval folded cardbase. With a red marker color the inside edges of the cardbase. Repeat with green marker to the outside edges.

Using the same oval die, cut two ovals from green watermelon rind paper and two more ovals from red and black watermelon paper. Glue one of the red ovals inside the cardbase, fold cardbase in half and trim off red paper at fold. Repeat with the second red piece. Glue one green oval to the back side of cardbase. Trim at fold. Glue the last green oval to front of card.

The card front will be the only complete oval. All other panels should have been trimmed to allow the cardbase to fold. (Note in photo that a hint of red shows on the back of the card.)

Decorate the outside of the cardbase with sentiments cut from the collection pack papers.

Collage Mechanism: (Watch the assembly video for the Heart Collage Pop-Up located at the bottom of the linked page.) Cut the mechanism from red cardstock. Train folds and glue inside the cardbase. Allow the glue to dry before connecting the locking tabs. Cut sentiment panels from paper collection. Round the corners. Play with positioning of the panels onto the mechanism before permanently gluing in place. (I found that my side arms needed to be thin pieces and the top and bottom arms could handle larger panels.) Take the largest panel and fold in half before gluing over locking mechanism tabs.

Add other decorations to cardbase always checking for catchpoints to avoid.

Envelope: Decorated the back envelope flap with decorative strips from paper collection.

Summertime Fun

It’s time for the Karen Burniston design team challenge for July 2023 with the theme of “COLLECTION PACK CREATIONS” – using papers from collection packs of papers plus at least one die from the June 2023 release.

The collection pack that I chose to work with was Echo Park’s Best Summer Ever designed by Jen Allyson. The stickers reminded me of summers spent in the backyard with a blow-up pool, Dad grilling burgers, lots of watermelon and friends and family all around.

From the June release, I picked the Fence Landscape Accordion Add-On and Small Scenes Bam Box die sets. I also used two previously released die sets – Fireplace Pop-Up and Paper Frames Pop-Up.

Cardbase: I used a purchased A6 (4 1/2 x 6 1/4-inch) card base and cut papers to cover the four panels of the card.

Fence: The new fence add-on is a versatile die set. I cut one fence from a woodgrain embossed cardstock and did a partial die-cut to get one large post with the same die and cardstock. (I like the look the embossed cardstock gives to a white fence better than printed woodgrain paper which often has dark lines in it that makes the fence look pieced together.) Leave the tabs on the extra post and use them to glue to the fence so that it has three posts.

To make the fence pop-up I used the small strip pop-up mechanism in the Fireplace Pop-Up die set behind each of the three fence posts. Once the mechanisms are glued in place add grass from the fence set to the front of the fence.

Grill: I adhered the sticker to a piece of yellow cardstock and fussy cut it out. Next, I made bam box from the Small Scenes Bam Box die set. (See assembly video.) This smaller bam box is the perfect size for the grill sticker. I figured out which way I wanted the box to fold flat in the card and glued it in place. Grass (from fence set) was glued to the front of the bam box and then the grill over the grass.

Pool: I used two stickers to make the unicorn float in the pool. They were stuck together and then glued as one piece to yellow cardstock and fussy cut. I had a small bam box already made which was used behind the pool. (The key to installing bam boxes is to play with the positioning of the box and its attached element in both the open and folded positions.)

Decorations: There are lots of small stickers in the collection pack which makes decorating easy. I make some bluebell flowers to go behind the fence. Tweezers were needed to place the flowers after they were assembled. I ended up adding the pink flamingos because they were taller than the fence.

The string of lights was created using the circle banner dies in the Paper Frames Pop-Up set glued over a piece of baker’s twine glued to the corners of the card.

Sentiments: All the sentiments are either stickers or a journaling card which was used on the front of the card with sticker sunglasses added. A pink label was cut from the Paper Frames Pop-Up set for a personal message.

Envelope: The card fits into an A6 envelope with a slice of watermelon sticker on its back flap.

One in a Melon

When you are caught eating a melon at a farm stand you know you are one in a melon!

This cute little card is made from an Art Impressions Tryfolds by Bonnie Krebs. The set has six stamps and two dies that cut the apertures or windows in the farm stand and fruit stand.

I stamped the images on white cardstock with a permanent black ink that won’t run when wet and colored with watercolor pencils. Next I fussy cut the images.

The card base is made from two pieces blue gingham cardstock (5 ½ inches x 4 ¼ inches) and a piece of green gingham cardstock cut 6 inches x 4 ¼ inches. The green piece was scored and fold at ¼ inch on each end to form two tabs to glue the two blue pieces to form the tri-fold card.

I positioned my stamped, colored and cut out images following the layout on the packaging to determine the positioning of the front image. I traced the inside of the opening onto the card front and used the accompanying die to die cut the hole. Next, I glued the image in place on the front. I did the same for the middle image on the second flap, positioning the image so it shows through the aperture cut in the first image and then die-cutting the aperture. The final image was positioned, traced and then glue in place on the central panel.

The “Happy Birthday” is die-cut from green cardstock and glued in place.

Stamped on the back flap of an A2 slim envelope from Taylored Expressions is the sentiment from the stamp set “You’re one in a Melon!” green ink.

Watermelon Shaker Truck

Watermelon Truck -front-CU

Cold watermelon on a hot summer’s day – what could be better? How about a shaker card of a watermelon truck.

This card was the first I’ve made from Queen & Co. complete card kits. The kits come with dies, self-adhesive foam/acetate shakers, shaker fillers, stamps and 6×6 paper pads. The instructions are straightforward and easy to understand.

I have augmented the kits with some tiny watermelon slices I had on hand as well as the Lawn Fawn ants and watermelon stamp set.

The kits add to the possibilities of my Spellbinders Sunday Drive and Truck Large Die of the Month -OCT18 as the accessories are in a similar scale to all the vehicle sets.

The envelope was stamped with the Lawn Fawn stamps while the card sentiment is from the Special Delivery kit and was heat embossed in glossy black.
