Autumn Pop-Up Card with Animals

It’s time for the Karen Burniston Design Team November 2025 Challenge whose theme is FUN FACES. I made a slimline Thanksgiving card using two new stamp sets – Fall Phrases and Fun Faces 1.

Cardbase: I cut a 7 1/2×8 5/8-inch rectangle from white 65lb. cardstock. Then I scored and folded in half to create a 3 3/4×8 5/8-inch slimline cardbase.

Animals: Using the Woodland Animals and Winter Animals die sets make two bears, one raccoon, one fox and one squirrel. Use the Fun Faces 1 to stamp on the animals eyes, noses and mouths. Make four red apples from the Tiny Fruit set and add to all the animals except the squirrel. Make an acorn for the squirrel using the tiny acorn die in the Woodland Animals set.

Leaf and Acorn Border: Cut eight oak leaves from the Tree Pop-Up set and seven acorns using the tiny acorn die in the Woodland Animals set. (I cut a bunch of leaves from orange and brown cardstock and four more acorns knowing I would use the leftovers to decorate the inside of the card.) adhere to front border strip as shown in the photos and video.

Pumpkins: Cut three pumpkins from orange patterned paper. Dry emboss them using the pumpkin die from the Autumn Elements set in your die cutting machine’s embossing sandwich. Cut two of the pierced labels for the Little Labels Pop-Up side labels from green patterned paper. Layer together a pumpkin onto the green label and decorate with leftover leaves and acorns. Adhere the remaining pumpkin to the card back.

Label Pop-Up: Cut one of the large die in the Little Labels Pop-Up set from green cardstock. (Watch the assembly video located at the bottom of the linked page.) Assemble as show in the video above.

Sentiments: The inside stamped sentiments are from the Fall Phrases set. The die cut “Happy Thanksgiving” is cut from orange pattern paper using the Word Set 7 – Autumn set. From white cardstock, cut two medium sized labels from the Labels – Crosshatch, the center label and three banners from the Little Labels Pop-Up set to stamp. Adhere the largest two labels as places to write a personal message.

Envelope:  The card fits into a #10 business size envelope whose back flap was stamped in brown ink “Thankful Grateful Blessed” from the Fall Phrases stamp set.

Thanksgiving Pop-Up Room Scene Card

It’s time for the November 2024 Karen Burniston Design Team Challenge of Autumn or Christmas Cheer celebrating the season.

I’ve chosen to celebrate Autumn and Thanksgiving harvest foods with another 6×6-inch pop-up kitchen scene card featuring the new Sweet Treats clear stamp set along with the previously released Oven Pop-Up, Oven Extras, Baking Borders, Explosion Pop-Up and Bitty Ball and Mini Ball Double-Ups die sets.

Cardbase: From 100 lb. cardstock cut two 6 x 6 1/2-inch rectangles, one 6 x12-inch rectangle, and one 6 x 5-inch rectangle. Watch video to see the order of assembly of pieces and when to cover pieces with decorative paper.

Windows: Using the Bitty Ball Double-Ups large die, cut windows into the two 6 x 6 1/2-inch rectangles of the card base. Use the Mini Ball Double-Ups to cut the rear window in the 4 1/2-inch tall wall panel. The door uses the Rectangles–Crosshatch and the Long Rectangles–Crosshatch as well as the leftover rectangles from the oven rack and black circle from the oven burner in the Oven Pop-Up set.

Oven: Cut two of the Oven Pop-Up base and cut one in half and assemble the base pieces as shown in the tutorial video above. Complete as shown in Karen Burniston’s assembly video. (Watch assembly video on the dies’ linked page.)

Cabinets: Cut eight of the cabinet doors from the Oven Extras set. (Watch assembly video on the dies’ linked page.) Add to the scene as shown in the tutorial video above. The double cabinet counter tops are cut using the second smallest rectangle in the Short Rectangles-Crosshatch. (While the tutorial video shows using the Explosion Pop-Up for the base of the island cabinets, you could just use a cut down oven base for this island.)

Decorations: The pies come from the Baking Borders set while the oven mitts are from the Oven Pop-Up set. The turkey in the roasting pan in the oven as well as the orange pot on the stove are from the Oven Extras set as is the pop-up cubes that animate them as the card opens. The pumpkins and leaves on the outside panels are from the Autumn Elements set.

Sentiments: The card uses two sentiments from an American Crafts journaling card paper sheet as well as the Sweet Treats stamped sentiments. Die-cut “Happy Thanksgiving” and “Welcome Autumn” come from Word Set 7- Autumn.

Envelope:  The card is thick, so a special padded envelope is needed to mail it.

Baking For The Holidays

It’s time for the Karen Burniston June 2024 Design Team Challenge with the theme of using border dies.

I wanted to get a jump on my end-of-the-year holiday cards by making a baking themed card with pies and gingerbread men from the Baking Borders and Christmas Borders 1 set. The rolling pin and chef’s hat are also in the Baking Borders set. Additional die sets used were:  Oven Pop-Up, Tiny Gnomes, and the Fancy Label Accordion. (A 1 3/4-inch square die was used from the Frame Pull Pop-Up set, but any 1 3/4-inch square die could be used. This was the one I had handy.)

Cardbase: Cut three of the largest die in the Fancy Label Accordion set from a butterscotch-colored heavy cardstock. Work the scored fold-lines.  Wait to until after making and attaching the oven shaker to glue the frames together.

Shaker Oven: Cut ten ovens from red cardstock and two additional ovens from coated red cardstock using the oven die from the Oven Pop-Up set. Trim off stove top section on all 12 pieces. From the two coated cardstock stove top pieces, trim off the back where knobs go and save. Layout oven with stove back on one panel of the cardbase. Mark the outside edges of oven lightly with pencil. Center 1 3/4-inch square die within the oven square and die cut. (You may want to use a ruler to find the center of the fancy label and center the die left to right with the center line. The die will be below the true center up and down because of the stove back piece.)

Glue five of the plain cardstock oven pieces to either side of the cardbase over the square opening. This will form the shaker base. Cut two 2-inch square pieces of clear acetate/plastic.  Attach one piece of acetate/plastic with double-sided tape to the top of stacked oven pieces. Turn over and fill shaker with confetti and tiny cookie shapes from the Oven Pop-Up set. Attach the second piece of acetate/plastic with double-sided tape to seal up the oven shaker.

Cut two 1 1/2-inch square pieces of clear acetate/plastic. Adhere to the back of oven doors on the remaining two coated oven pieces using double-sided tape. With more double-sided tape added to the outer edges of the oven pieces, attach them over the shaker acetate/plastic. Glue the stove back with knobs attached to the cardbase above the ovens on both sides.

Pies, Gingerbread Men and Rolling Pins: Cut two strips of pie bases from the Baking Borders set. Color one strip all red .(I used a red glitter brush.) Color four orange and four baked apple yellow on the other strip. Cut out four of each of the pie tops. Ink the pie top to look like browned crusts with maybe some burnt tips of the crusts. Glue lattice pie crust to apple yellow pies, the open ring crust onto the pumpkin orange pies and the flower shaped crusts onto the red pies. Cut all the pies into separate circular pieces. Glue pies to the top and bottom of the front and back panel frames of the card base.

Cut two strips of gingerbread men using the die in the Christmas Borders 1 set. Using a white gel pen with a fine tip, trace the icing onto the men using the stencil feature of the die. Cut men apart and glue to sides of the front and back panel frames of the card base.

Cut two strips of the rolling pins from a kraft colored cardstock using the die from the Baking Borders set. With a red fine-tipped marker stencil on the hearts and color all the handles. Trim the strips to fit the top and bottom of the middle panel frame. Save one of the leftover rolling pins for the chef to hold.

Chef: From the Tiny Gnomes set, cut two of the body piece and one mustache from white cardstock. From flesh colored cardstock cut the head, nose and hands. From black cardstock cut the shoes. With a fine tipped pen, trace the eyes using the stencil feature of the head die. Color the mustache brown or gray. Cut one chef’s hat from white using the die in the Baking Borders set. Using the rolling pin die to stencil a red heart onto the chef’s hat.

To assemble, cut one body piece to have an apron in the center and an arm on either side. (See video for visuals of this.) Glue apron onto other body piece and then head. Added mustache then nose to head. Glue arms onto back of body wide enough to hold a rolling pin. Glue rolling pin to end of arms and then add hands on top of rolling pin handles. Attach shoes and hat.

Sentiments: “Happy Holidays” comes from Word Set 3-Holidays. The labels behind it and the chef are from the decorator dies in the Fancy Label Accordion set. Personal messages can be written on the back of the panels.

Envelope: The card fits into an A7 size envelope decorated with leftover pies and rolling pins on the back flap.

Aquarium Holidays Card

This card was made for Craft Roulette #190 whose parameters included a fancy fold card, aquarium colors, November element and 3-item cluster.

My first thought with these parameters was to a card I had made may years ago featuring a cat looking through a goldfish bowl using Karen Burniston dies. My next thought was how to incorporate a November element. Turkey instead of cat was my answer. While the accordion/pivot card is a fiddly sort of card to assemble, I wanted a quicker version, hence the Z-fold cardbase with squares cut into them and fish with sequin shells and stars sandwiched in between sheets of acetate.

Cardbase: cut one 5 1/2-inch by 8 1/2-inch rectangle of blue cardstock and another rectangle from the same cardstock that is 5 1/2-inch by 4 3/4-inch. Score and fold the large rectangle in half to a 5 1/2-inch by 4 1/4-inch side fold card. Score and fold a 1/2-inch tab along the long edge of the smaller rectangle. Adhere the tab to one of the long edges of the other piece to form a z-fold three panel card.

Windows: Keeping the large rectangle piece of the card base fold in half, I used a 2.4-inch square die to cut through the first panel and mark where I needed to place the die to cut the second panel. I unfolded the cardbase and folded the tabbed panel back against the middle panel that had the markings of where the square die should go. Using the markings to place the die I cut the second panel’s window and made markings for where the die should be placed for the third panel’s window. After cutting the third panel, I took the square die and the next largest die with crosshatching and taped them together to form a die that would cut a frame to go around the windows. Cut six of these frames from darker blue cardstock.

Cut six squares of clear acetate or plastic film and adhere them with thin double-sided tape to the backsides of the frames. Attach frames to one side of the card base. Flip cardbase and adhere fish and decorations with glue dots to acetate making sure the placement works when the card is folded closed. When happy with the placement of aquarium items, attach the remaining three frames to sandwich the items inside the aquarium windows.

Fish: I used the fish from the Camping Charms to cut two fish from green cardstock. Then I traced their fins and scales with a green marker on both sides and then finished each side with a coat of glitter gloss. For the headwear I free-hand cut the yamaka from black and die cut the Santa hat from the Christmas Animals set.

Turkey: Because the turkey is seen from both the front and the back, I made sure to use colored cardstock that was the same on both the front and back. I only had to cut two of the decorative feather arch pieces. The beak and wattle are all cut with the same die, so I cut from orange and colored the wattle red with a marker. Textured metallic cardstock was used for the body, head and beak and wattle.

Lights: Since my family starts putting up Christmas light on Thanksgiving weekend, the light strands above the turkey and the fish with a Santa hat have multicolored lights while the lights above the fish with a black yamaka on his head has blue and white lights commonly used for Hanukkah in America. I used the light strand die from the Christmas Borders 1 set cutting the die in a variety of colors and using the black and green ones as my base strands and then snipping off other colors light blub part and gluing to the base strand. Finally, I covered the bulbs with Glossy Accents to make them look light glass blubs.

Sentiment: The sentiment is from Spellbinders and cuts in five separate pieces -H ol idays and H appy. The two words are on the front and back of each panel so that the is a continuous “Happy Holidays” being read. Thanksgiving panel in brown, Hanukkah in blue and Christmas in red.

A Thanksgiving Kitchen Card

A home cooked meal is often the ideal image and scent of Thanksgiving, but what really matters is a grateful heart for all the blessings we have.

The card uses dies from Karen Burniston’s September 2023 release including Oven Extras and Oven Pop-Up, and a few other previously released die sets.

Before starting, I recommend watching the assembly videos of the pop-ups which are usually near the bottom of the linked pages for the various dies used.

Cardbase: I started with a rectangle of patterned cardstock 12×6 inches that was folded in half to form a 6-inch square, top fold card. The outside was left to the beautiful autumn trees (Photoplay Autumn Vibes-Crunchy Leaves) while the inside top panel with a teal blue leaf wallpaper and the bottom panel a brown textured cardstock.

Oven/Stove: I was genuinely surprised at how easy the pop-up oven is assembled. It has just two pieces -the outer shell which I cut from black mirror cardstock and the inner platform which I cut from a gray cardstock. The platform attaches much like the Little Labels Pop-Up with the front tabs gluing to the floor of the card and the back tab gluing to the wall of the card. Before I attached the outer shell, I added a 1 3/8-inch square of clear plastic packaging to the back of the oven door with double-sided tape. Then I cut another oven door from gray cardstock trimming the bottom 1/8-inch shy of the fold line to cover the plastic inside when the door was opened. I also cut a 2-inch square of gray cardstock and glued it to the back wall just above the pop-up platform. This will be the inside wall of the oven. It is easier to add the items inside the oven before the outer shell is attached. I glued a silver rack to the platform and then added two pop-up cubes for the top oven rack which I trimmed one of the long edges from. Once the top rack was glued in place on the two cubes, I added another cube on top for the turkey pan which is in the Oven Extras set.

I find it easier to glue all the knobs, burners and door handle to the stove while it is still flat. (For this stove I cut all the knobs, burner base circles and door handle from gold foil cardstock). To attach the oven shell, glue the bottom to the center of the platform and then fold the oven flat and add adhesive to the back of the stove knob panel. Close the card and the top panel will be positioned on the card wall so that it forms the stove. On the tabs that come off the sides of the stove top add glue. Now position the squares of the cabinet pieces’ onto the tabs. Glue cabinet bottoms to the top edge of the platform, so that there is a toe kick below the cabinets.

Cabinets: Once the stove is attached, you can add the side cabinets. I cut the cabinets from some embossed wood grain cardstock and then inked them with Rusty Hinge ink to bring out the grain. The upper cabinets and lower cabinet door fronts are cut using the larger rectangle die in the Oven Extras set and then covered with the small rectangle die pieces.

To make the counter tops longer to fill the card, I followed Sandy Diller’s idea to use the larger rectangle door die for the countertops and two trimmed lampposts from the Street Lantern Pop-Up set for the turned legs that support the extended countertops.

Decorations: Between the two oven sets are lots of fun pieces that add dimension and realism to the pop-up scene. The Oven Pop-Up set includes the stove burners and knobs, oven rack and door handle. The Oven Extras set includes the turkey and roasting pan in the oven and pot on the stove as well as three pop-up cube strips that I used to pop-up the oven rack, pan inside the oven and pot on the stove. The turkey is cut in two pieces – leg bone base in pan and the bird body. The body I cut from kraft cardstock and inked with Fossilized Amber and Vintage Photo inks. The bone/pan base was cut from white cardstock and the pan colored with a silver marker, the body piece glued on so it sits in the pan and the bone was inked with rusty hinge ink.

For the orange pot, I used clear packing taper over orange cardstock to die-cut the pot. The plaid rug is cut from the second largest crosshatch die from the Rectangle Crosshatch set. I found a patterned paper (Photoplay Thankful Collection) with shelves of kitchen items and a message board that I fussy cut and adhered to the wall with foam squares. The cooking hood was cut from gold foil cardstock using the hood die from the Oven Extras set. The large pumpkin on the floor is from the Autumn Elements set.

Sentiments: The small strip sentiments of “give thanks with a grateful heart” (card front) and “thankful hearts” on envelope flap are from the same paper collection as the autumn trees paper used on the card front. “Happy Thanksgiving” was cut into the plaid rug with the waste pieces saved and glued on to the card floor once the rung was glued in place. These words are from Word Set 7.

Envelope: The sticker leaves and sentiment strip on the back of the envelope set the tone for the card inside and are from the Photoplay Autumn Vibes paper collection.

Baking for Thanksgiving

This card was made for Craft Roulette #182 whose parameters included a card with circles, vegetable garden colors, screen element and fuzz.

For this pop-up Thanksgiving card, I used Karen Burniston’s new Oven Pop-Up, along with her Memory Charms and Crosshatch Ovals

Cardbase: I used a purchased A6 cardbase that I trimmed down to 4.5×6 inches.Each of the four panels are covered with papers from the Cozy Fall paper collection. The front of the card has a stenciled wreath of leaves using oxide inks.

Oven/Stove: Watch the assembly video at the bottom of the linked page before starting the card. I cut my stove from a piece of orange cardstock covered with clear packing tape. I found that the silver foil oven door handle did not like to stay glued to the packing tape, so I reverted to glue dots to hold the handle on. The inside of the oven and pop-up platform were cut from a metallic coated black textured cardstock. I find it easier to add the stove knobs and burners to the stove in a flat position before attaching it to the card. Also it is easier to add any baking trays to the platform before attaching the oven to the platform.

Cabinets: Once the stove is attached; you can add the side cabinets. I cut the cabinets from some embossed wood grain cardstock and then inked them with brown ink to bring out the grain. The drawer and door (cookie tray) panels are part of the Oven Pop-Up set.  Decorative paper was used for the countertops. The upper cabinets are cut using the cookie tray die.

TV: The TV set from the Memory Charms die set has had its antenna and feet trimmed off and Nuvo Drops added for knobs. I screen shot a photo from the Craft Roulette episode #182 and resized it to a 1-inch rectangle, print on white paper and die-cut it with the TV screen die.

Decorations: Cotton fuzz was pulled from a cotton ball to be the steam off the tray of cookies fresh from the oven. The cookie tray, cookies, turner utensil, oven rack, oven mitt, and cabinet knobs are all part of the Oven Pop-Up set. The oval rug with its white label for a personal message come from the Crosshatch Ovals set.

Sentiments: The sentiments on the front (“Happy Thanksgiving Day”) and back (“Hello Fall”) come from the Cozy Fall paper collection.

Thanksgiving Basket

Being thankful for friends, family and a good harvest is what this basket pop-up card is all about.

This pop-up Thanksgiving card features some of Karen Burniston’s December 2022 release die sets – Wide Woven Basket Box Card and Bam Box.

Wide Woven Basket: This die set makes it easy to create a rectangular pop-up basket. (Prior to this set you had to die cut an extra set of pieces to widen the basket sides and grass. See video.) When used with the previously released Woven Basket Box Card, you cut two sets of the original size sides and two sets of the wide size sides. Follow the directions on the package or the assembly video to weave the basket and join the sides together. (I cut four rope handles because my cardstock was printed on the back side – so two ropes glued together.)

Crossbars of Grass: The Wide Woven Basket Box Card includes the wide grass crossbars used to attach the various balls. (I cut four to make a full basket and glued them in rather than tucked as suggested in the video.)

Autumn Elements: The leaves, vine, pumpkin and acorns are all from a previously released Karen Burniston Autumn Elements die set. (I didn’t do a test layout of my leaves with the basket folded closed overt the envelope, hence the folded tips of leaves to fit into the envelope.)

Sentiment: The “Happy Thanksgiving” is from the Karen Burniston Autumn word set. It is a single layer of a contrasting color from the basket. For the matted label on the back of the basket, I used the large rectangle and the smaller stitched rectangle from Karen Burniston’s Slim Frames set. This label is for a personal message.

Bam Boxes: To animate the basket when it comes out of the envelope and pops into shape, two small “Bam Boxes” were used. (Bam Box assembly video)These easy to make, rectangular boxes are powered by a small rubber band. (I used #8 size bands.) These go in diagonally opposite corners of the basket. Once glued in, the basket will only fold flat in one direction. (I recommend using a heavy weight cardstock for bam boxes and letting each stage of gluing dry before moving onto the next step.)

Envelope: As with all my cards that are sent in an envelope, I have stamped the back flap. This time it is stamped with my main sentiment. This is an A7 envelope.
