Stenciled cards by the batch load

Needing a lot of cards, I decided to stencil some A7 size card bases to make some special pop-up birthday cards for a card exchange.  Here are the 10 cards I made using purchased card bases with matching envelopes.

Watch the video below to see how I made these cards.

Cardbase: I used five white cardbases and envelopes by Park Lane and five kraft paper cardbases and envelopes by American Crafts.

Pop-Up Mechanism: The pop-up mechanism that lifts the β€œHappy Birthday” and balloons is Karen Burniston’s Katherine Label Pop-Up. (Watch an assembly video for it by clicking on the die name and scrolling down to the bottom of the linked page.)

Stenciling: I used three different stencils and two different colors of stencil pastes. First, I taped down the cardbase to a piece of packing paper (think brown craft paper/newsprint) next I taped the stencil to the scrap paper over the cardbase and applied the stencil paste using a disposable plastic knife left from a take-out meal. Between each card, I washed the stencil and knife.

Sentiments:  The β€œHello” and β€œHappy Birthday” die cut sentiments, balloons and pop-up mechanism are all by Karen Burniston. The stamped birthday verse is by Craft Roulette and stamped in brown ink.

Accordion Birthday Card For A Crafty Friend

This card was made for Craft Roulette #247 whose parameters included a card for a crafty friend, pretty paper colors, bell(s) or belle(s) element, and something gold. I used Craft Roulette stamp sets and Karen Burniston dies.

Watch the process video to see how I made this card.

Cardbase: Β Cut three of the large die from the Landscape Rectangle Accordion die set from heavy weight cardstock. Cut three of the same die from thin decorative papers. Trim out the center pivot panel and side tab to form the decorative frames. Glue frames onto the larger panels. (I used a pretty patterned paper of blue, lavender and green for the center frame and coordinating lavender paper for the other two frames.)

Fence: Β Watch the assembly video at the bottom of this linked page Fence Add-Ons for a how-to on adding the fence into the accordion frame. (I used coordinating striped paper to cover gray cardstock fence pieces before i glued the fence in place.) The bluebell flowers are from the Fence Add-Ons die set.

People: The people were stamped using Craft Roulette’s Funn Friend stamp sets #1 and #2. They are colored with blended watercolor pencils. Using some teal colored twine, I tied a multi-looped bow with a small gold bell onto the card frame.

Sentiments:  On the third panel is the poetic crafty birthday sentiment which was embellished with hand-drawn balloons and a hint of glitter gloss. The sentiment is from the Craft Roulette Funn Sentiments #1 stamp set. The “Happy Birthday” and HBD sign are stamps in the Funn Friend #1 stamp set. “Crafty Friend” was hand written.

Envelope:  The card fits into a purchased A7 (5x 7-inches) size cream envelope. The back flap of the envelope was stamped with “HBD” (Happy Birthday) in a plum colored ink.

Birthday Treats

This card was made for Craft Roulette #215 whose parameters included for Project – Happy Birthday, petting zoo colors, scoop element and tab(s).

This card uses Karen Burniston’s die sets of Big Birthday Charms, Waterfall Card, Sweet Treats Charms, and Word Set 2 – Birthday. The Confection paper collection by Authentique is also a star of this card.

Cardbase: Use a 5.5 x4.25-inch white piece of cardstock and cover front with confetti sprinkles patterned paper. Die cut half round notch from Waterfall Card die set at center bottom of short side of card.

Waterfall: Watch the assembly video at the bottom of the linked page for the Waterfall Card. I cut the mechanism pieces (pull strip and base) from yellow cardstock. The largest square die was used to cut four double-sided patterned paper pages. Assemble waterfall as shown in video.

Food Pop-Ups: Cut and assemble the ice cream cone from the Sweet Treats Charms set. The slice of cake and large candle are made using the Big Birthday Charms set. Cut off the charm loops on both. Cake icing has Glossy Accents clear gel on it. Candle flames have glitter gloss on them.

Cut small strips of patterned cardstock and fold in half and then fold the ends to the center fold to form a pop-up cube to glue into the first two pages. Once these pop-up cubes’ glue has dried, attach the food elements to cubes. The large candle is popped-up with two strips of cardstock behind it.

Sentiments: β€œCelebrate!” and β€œHappy Birthday” are from Word Set 2. The balloons and streams are from the Big Birthday Charms set. The quote by Iris Murdoch was in the paper collection. The back of the pull tab was stamped with β€œInspired by Craft Roulette. Made by” and signature and CR episode listed.

Envelope: The back flap of the envelope is decorated with leftover strips of patterned paper.

Celebrating A 9th Birthday

Growing a year older should be celebrated. This show-stopper card is for a 9-year-old.

For this card I used two new dies from Karen Burniston’s December 2023 release – Birthday Candle Add-Ons and the Topper Tags – as well as her Fancy Label Accordion, Fancy Winter Frames, and a few other previously released die sets to decorate.

Before starting, watch assembly videos for the linked die sets. The videos are towards the bottom of the linked pages.

Accordion Frames: Cut four accordion frames using the Fancy Label Accordion die set. They will be decorated AND THEN assembled. It is much harder to decorate a fully assembled accordion card when you cannot flatten the various moving panels and frames. (I assembled this card as I would normally, but the candle and heart add-ons are designed to be assembled with with the accordion frame behind the add-on panel and not as I did by putting the frame’s center post in front of the panel.)

Candles Add-Ons: The Birthday Candles Add-On cut a pivot panel that attaches to two Fancy Label Accordion panels. It also has dies to cut and stencil four candles and their flames. Cut one candle panel from a solid color cardstock. Cut another from decorative paper. Train the folds on the solid color panel as directed on the packaging. Using the largest decorator label from the Fancy Label Accordion set, cut a frame from the decorative paper. (The section between the two label cut outs will fall out and the frame can be cut down the center fold.) Glue the frame onto the panel matching up the edges.

Assemble and decorate the candles using the die stenciling feature or use decorative papers. (Because I needed to celebrate a 9-year-old’s birthday, I did not use all twelve candles that the panel will hold. I decided to add a number 9 as another candle by cutting a β€œ9” using the Numbers die set and cut the top of a candle with the flame attached to the back top of the number.) The flames I cut from a background paper I had made using glitter ink and drew the black burnt wick onto them.

Once the panel is fully decorated, work on the accordion frames that it will be glued onto. Glue two frames together using the outer long tab. From one panel cut the label panel along the pivot point making sure to keep the label attached to the pivot bar. Cut the other label, but the cut will look different than the other panel. See photo below. Add glue to the back side of the candle panel and attach it to one of the label panels. Add glue to the other end of the candle panel and attach it to the other label panel. (See 2nd photo under tags for what the back side of the attached candles panel into the accordion frames.)

Tags: Cut two tags using the second from the smallest tag die in the Topper Tags. (If your paper is a single-sided decorative paper like mine was, cut two more tags that cover at least the part of the tag that will not be covered by the fancy label panel. Glue the tags together as shown in the photo below.) Attach the back of the tags to the fancy label panels on their backsides.

Decorations: The Birthday Charms die set are used for balloons, party hats and cupcake. Three colors of bakers twine are used for the balloon strings and for tag ties. A thin black pen was used to draw the balloon strings onto card back. The frame borders are cut from white copier paper backed with a wide double-sided tape using the polka-dot frame die from the Fancy Winter Frames.

Once the frame borders are adhered, attach the end accordion frames to the candle frames. Add balloons to the folds and then glue the fancy labels together.

Sentiments: Add the sentiments once the accordion frames and fancy labels are all attached together. β€œHappy Birthday” uses two dies – Happy Birthday Shadow and Happy Birthday. β€œJust for You” uses three die sets – Word Set 15, Word Set 8 and Mini Alphabet. The “You” is cut from a phrase die and its shadow is created by tracing the outside of the die and fussy cutting. (You could use other word dies for the β€œYou.”)

Envelope: The closed card fits into an A7 (5×7-inch) envelope.

Celebrating 66 Years of Marriage!

Recently I had the honor of creating a pop-up card celebrating a couple’s 66th wedding anniversary. Since there are no special designations for the 66th anniversary, I decided to go with silver, gold and sapphire blue as colors and balloons, stars, hearts and streamers as elements. My inspiration for the card came from a 50th anniversary card by Nicky Foden using Karen Burniston‘s Heart Collage Pop-Up, Balloon Collage Add-Ons and other dies.

Before I began, I read through Nicky’s blog on her card and watched Karen Burniston’s video on making a triple heart collage slimline pop-up card. I learned that I would need to trim down the outer mechanisms’ arms that will stick out of the card and continually test the placement of items to avoid catch points. The mechanism I used is the from the Heart Collage Pop-Up die set.

Cardbase: I used a medium weight white cardstock rectangle measuring 8 3/4 x 7 3/4-inches. When folded in half, the card measures 3 3/8 x 8 3/4-inches. Using the largest two dies from the Long Rectangles – Crosshatch die set, I cut frames from gold glitter cardstock and a large white rectangle to cover the front of the card. The frames went on the front and back of the card. For the inside of the card, I followed the dimensions of the largest die, but used a paper cutter to cut two panels of gold dotted acetate. (The acetate was too thick for the die to cut well.) While the glitter cardstock and white cardstock could be adhered using glue, the acetate required double sided-tape. Measuring the inside of the glitter frame on the back of the card, I cut a piece of acetate to fit the opening.

Mechanisms: Following Karen’s instructions on the placement of the mechanisms, I marked the locations with pencil on the inner fold. Making sure to line-up the pencil mark in the center hole of the mechanism and aligning the mechanism fold to the card fold, before I adhered one side of the mechanism to the card. Because of the acetate being used for the surface the mechanisms would adhered to, I used red backed super sticky double-sided tape. Once the mechanisms were in place and trained by opening and closing the card, I noted which arms stuck out of the card and trimmed them to fit inside the card.

Decorating: Die-cutting a number of balloons and stars from the Balloon Collage Add-Ons die set and ribbons with tiny hearts from the Border Blends – Trims, I hoped I had enough pieces to decorate the card. Watching Karen’s video one more time to see how the dimension pieces needed to be installed on the mechanisms, I stated with those balloons on the top arms. I worked from the tips of the arms and center mechanisms using balloons, testing for catch points before gluing in permanently. Next came stars and streamers (I cut the ribbon down into smaller streamers.) Finally the tiny hearts. I used double-sided tape to adhere anything to the front of the glitter cardstock or acetate on the cardbase.

Sentiment: To create the custom “Happy 66th Anniversary” sentiment on the front of the card, I used two die sets – Word Set 12- Anniversary and Numbers. The Numbers set comes with the “th” as well as “st”, “rd” and “nd”. For the label to write a personal message inside the card, I used white cardstock and my favorite crosshatch label die from the Rectangles and Labels – Crosshatch set.

Envelope: The back of the envelope is decorated with ribbon bits and tiny hearts all cut from the Border Blends – Trims die set.
