A Christmas Pop-Up Card – Poinsettia and Candy Canes

This card was inspired by a 3D embossing folder that features poinsettias and candy canes by Spellbinders. It also uses some new dies by Karen Burniston and paper by Graphic 45.

Card Back

Cardbase:  I used a purchased A7 (5×7-inch) side fold cardbase with matching envelope. (Color the fold both inside and out using markers that are close in color to the papers, so that the white fold line is less seen.) The cardbase was covered using decorative papers.

Embossed Front: The Spellbinders 3D embossing folder of the month for October 2024 embosses a 5 1/2×8 1/2-inch surface. I used gold foil cardstock to emboss and colored the image with fine tipped alcohol markers. (I found the smaller tipped makers got brighter coverage, but I went over most of the images two or three times to get my desired color.)

Poinsettia:  Using the Karen Burniston Poinsettia die set, cut one large poinsettia petals from green and another from red cardstock. Cut two of the small petals from red. Cut one red center and a second center from yellow cardstock backed with double sided adhesive tape to make stickers. Assemble the flower as shown in video. Cut berry branches and fir branches from green and berries from red cardstock covered with clear packing tape. Use berry die as a stencil to add white gel pen highlights to berries.

Fan Pop-Up:  Using the Photo Fan die set, cut one of the fan mechanism piece from decorative paper matching the card inside paper. Cut off arms and save arms. Glue two arms together and attach to fan with arm edge butted into the center fold of the fan. Install fan into card as directed in the video.

Sentiment:  Cut one of the Merry Christmas Lorna Add-on large die from red cardstock and the words from gold foil cardstock.

Envelope:  The card fits into an A2 (4.25x 5.5-inches) size envelope. I decorated the back flap of the envelope with candy canes from the Christmas Borders 2 die set.

Poinsettia Pop-Up Christmas Card

It’s Sneak Peak Week for Karen Burniston’s October 2024 release of new dies and sentiment stamps. These dies will be available for purchase on October 28, 2024 on the KB Riley LLC website.

Today’s card is an A2 size Christmas card that uses the new die sets of Poinsettia and Merry Christmas Lorna Add-Ons along with Season of Cheer stamp set.

CARDBASE: Cut an 8×6-inch rectangle of a double-sided patterned paper and fold in half to form a top-fold 4×6-inch cardbase.

LORNA LABEL: Follow the assembly video for the Lorna Label Pop-Up but cut out a frame by sandwiching the largest decorator label inside the Lorna Label die. Glue the Merry Christmas Add-Ons frame to the Lorna Label frame and decorate with words from add-on set before gluing the Lorna label pop-up into the card.

POINSETTIA: From the Poinsettia die set, cut one of the large leaves die from green and another from red. Cut one red from smaller leaves die. Brush the edges of the leaves with ink slightly darker than the cardstock. Cut the small, dotted center piece once from red and once from yellow. Save the yellow dots to inlay into the red center. Glue the large red piece onto the large green piece and then top with smaller red piece. Make sure to alternate the leaves for full coverage. Adhere red and yellow flower center. Die cut five pine branches and two of the berry stems to add around the large flower.

SENTIMENTS: The Merry Christmas Lorna Add-On set has a holly leaves shadow die that is just the right size to stamp the word “and” onto and glue to the bottom tip of the Lorna Label frame. The “and” and “Happy New Year” are from the Season of Cheer stamp set. The fishtail banner is a die in the Lorna Label Pop-Up set. The holly leaves and berries are in the Merry Christmas Lorna Add-On set.

Cherry Blossoms in the Park

It’s time for the May 2024 Karen Burniston Design Team Challenge with the theme of From the Vault. I used for inspiration a 2021 Thanksgiving card and made it into a spring card.

My new card uses a similar cardbase to the original, but I skipped the foundation and the fourth fold.

Cardbase: Cut from medium-weight cardstock three rectangles 6 1/4 x6-inches and one 6-inch square.  Cut five 6-inch squares of decorative green paper Using double-sided tape on the back of four of the decorative panels adhere to both sides of two of the 6 1/4 x6-inches rectangles. Cut out windows from the center of these two covered panels using the largest Square Crosshatch die. Attach window panels to opposite sides of the 6-inch square. Adhere last 6 1/4 x6-inches rectangle to bottom of the 6-inch square. Cover the hinge flaps with a decorative paper. (This will be the back of the folded close card. On my card it is pink.) Cover the 6-inch square inside with green decorative paper and the bottom square with a grass like paper. On the back side of grass covered square cover with a stone wall patterned paper.

Trees: Use the tree and leaf dies in the Tree Pop-Up set to cut five of each die. Glue leaves to trees. Die-cut 16 times the flower die in the same set from pink. Using a tiny ball flower shaping tool, push each flower into stiff foam to shape petals. Top of trees will be glued to each side of window frame panels and tree trunk will be sandwiched in between the fence pieces. (You will use two trees per window panel.) Wait to glue onto cardbase until one layer of fence is adhered to cardbase.

Fence: From the Iron Fence Pop-Up set, cut eight of the fence die in black. Trim off the end post on one piece and then trim off just before the fifth pence post a section of fence from a second piece to made a fence that is wide enough to span the 6-inch cardbase panels. Made five of theses fence sections. Glue a section to the bottom edge of one of the window panels. Attach a tree. Glue a fence to other side of window panel matching all the scrollwork up. Adhere remaining tree and fence to 6-inch square panel.

Tulips & Tree Flowers: Add six dots of glue to tree leaves on one panel and place tiny pink flowers in glue using the pointed tip of QuickStik to firmly attached to leaves. Continue with each of the five trees until flowers are all attached.

Cut from green cardstock 25 of the tulip base die in the Garden Charms set. Trim off charm loop from flower bases. From yellow cardstock cut 50 tulip flower tops. Glue a yellow top to front and back of all the flower bases. To create the flaming streaks of color, use a red brush marker starting at the bottom of the yellow tulip and drawing up to the points following the curves of the tulip shape.

Sentiments: Both the shadow die and word die were used for the “Happy Birthday.” The inside sentiment of “Happy Spring” is a words-only die.

Envelope: The card will fit in a catalog envelope of 6×9-inches.

Flower Pop-Up BeeDay Card

This card was made for Craft Roulette #212 whose parameters included a card for a co-worker, kites in the sky colors, April element and sparkle.

I used products available from Craftstash – USA or –UK

Cardbase: I used thin papers to cover the four panels of the purchase A7 (5×7-inch) cardbase.  The green paper is from the Hot off the Press Pretty Papers. The front mustard yellow paper is from the Hot off the Press Spice Market.

Sentiments: Stamps used on the card front and inside the card are from the Sentimentally Yours – Botanical Bees – gift set in Creative Stamping issue 99, August 2021. The stamps on the back are from Craft Roulette – The Basics.

Pop-Up Flowers: Watch the Sam Calcott assembly video for the Pretty Blooms set.

Envelope: Stamped on the envelope back in black ink are a bee buzzing around a flower and the sentiment “Just bee-cause” from the Sentimentally Yours – Botanical Bees set.

Vintage Roses for Mother’s Day

The sweet pinks and reds of old-fashion rose bushes always remind me of their scent. This Mother’s Day card is a loving way to say how much mothers are appreciated.

I used Honeybee Stamps’ layering Bold Backgrounds Vintage Roses dies for the front of the card. The roses are cut from three different shades of pink cardstock and inked with a bright red ink. The leaves were cut in an apple green and inked with a medium green ink. There layering guide which you have to download from the Honeybee Stamps website shows how the the three sizes of roses are assembled. The sentiment banner is a strip of apple green cardstock 4 1/2-inched wide by 1/2-inches tall with fishtails ends cut free-hand and inked to match the leaves. The gold foiled sentiment strip “Appreciate You” is from Spellbinders that I had batched foiled previously.

The inside “Happy Mother’s Day” sentiment is cut from the apple green cardstock using a die by Papertrey Ink. The back of the card is covered with a striped sheet of printed paper from This Calls for Confetti.

I went stash diving to find a old-fashioned looking rose for the back of the envelope and ended up using a stamp set from Pinkfresh Studios called Pretty Paisley. The roses were stamped in melon red ink while the tiny sentiment “It’s the little things that make life big” was stamped in a green pear ink.
