It’s time for the Karen Burniston June 2024 Design Team Challenge with the theme of using border dies.
I wanted to get a jump on my end-of-the-year holiday cards by making a baking themed card with pies and gingerbread men from the Baking Borders and Christmas Borders 1 set. The rolling pin and chef’s hat are also in the Baking Borders set. Additional die sets used were: Oven Pop-Up, Tiny Gnomes, and the Fancy Label Accordion. (A 1 3/4-inch square die was used from the Frame Pull Pop-Up set, but any 1 3/4-inch square die could be used. This was the one I had handy.)

Cardbase: Cut three of the largest die in the Fancy Label Accordion set from a butterscotch-colored heavy cardstock. Work the scored fold-lines. Wait to until after making and attaching the oven shaker to glue the frames together.
Shaker Oven: Cut ten ovens from red cardstock and two additional ovens from coated red cardstock using the oven die from the Oven Pop-Up set. Trim off stove top section on all 12 pieces. From the two coated cardstock stove top pieces, trim off the back where knobs go and save. Layout oven with stove back on one panel of the cardbase. Mark the outside edges of oven lightly with pencil. Center 1 3/4-inch square die within the oven square and die cut. (You may want to use a ruler to find the center of the fancy label and center the die left to right with the center line. The die will be below the true center up and down because of the stove back piece.)
Glue five of the plain cardstock oven pieces to either side of the cardbase over the square opening. This will form the shaker base. Cut two 2-inch square pieces of clear acetate/plastic. Attach one piece of acetate/plastic with double-sided tape to the top of stacked oven pieces. Turn over and fill shaker with confetti and tiny cookie shapes from the Oven Pop-Up set. Attach the second piece of acetate/plastic with double-sided tape to seal up the oven shaker.
Cut two 1 1/2-inch square pieces of clear acetate/plastic. Adhere to the back of oven doors on the remaining two coated oven pieces using double-sided tape. With more double-sided tape added to the outer edges of the oven pieces, attach them over the shaker acetate/plastic. Glue the stove back with knobs attached to the cardbase above the ovens on both sides.
Pies, Gingerbread Men and Rolling Pins: Cut two strips of pie bases from the Baking Borders set. Color one strip all red .(I used a red glitter brush.) Color four orange and four baked apple yellow on the other strip. Cut out four of each of the pie tops. Ink the pie top to look like browned crusts with maybe some burnt tips of the crusts. Glue lattice pie crust to apple yellow pies, the open ring crust onto the pumpkin orange pies and the flower shaped crusts onto the red pies. Cut all the pies into separate circular pieces. Glue pies to the top and bottom of the front and back panel frames of the card base.
Cut two strips of gingerbread men using the die in the Christmas Borders 1 set. Using a white gel pen with a fine tip, trace the icing onto the men using the stencil feature of the die. Cut men apart and glue to sides of the front and back panel frames of the card base.
Cut two strips of the rolling pins from a kraft colored cardstock using the die from the Baking Borders set. With a red fine-tipped marker stencil on the hearts and color all the handles. Trim the strips to fit the top and bottom of the middle panel frame. Save one of the leftover rolling pins for the chef to hold.
Chef: From the Tiny Gnomes set, cut two of the body piece and one mustache from white cardstock. From flesh colored cardstock cut the head, nose and hands. From black cardstock cut the shoes. With a fine tipped pen, trace the eyes using the stencil feature of the head die. Color the mustache brown or gray. Cut one chef’s hat from white using the die in the Baking Borders set. Using the rolling pin die to stencil a red heart onto the chef’s hat.
To assemble, cut one body piece to have an apron in the center and an arm on either side. (See video for visuals of this.) Glue apron onto other body piece and then head. Added mustache then nose to head. Glue arms onto back of body wide enough to hold a rolling pin. Glue rolling pin to end of arms and then add hands on top of rolling pin handles. Attach shoes and hat.
Sentiments: “Happy Holidays” comes from Word Set 3-Holidays. The labels behind it and the chef are from the decorator dies in the Fancy Label Accordion set. Personal messages can be written on the back of the panels.
Envelope: The card fits into an A7 size envelope decorated with leftover pies and rolling pins on the back flap.
Inspired by a new Graphic 45 paper collection – Sunshine On My Mind that features watermelon papers, I created this A2 (4.25×5.5-inches) sized card using Karen Burniston’s Ovals and Heart Collage Pop-Up die sets.
Cardbase: Fold an 8.5 x 5.5-inch rectangle of card stock in half to form a top fold 4.24 x 5.5-inch card (or use a purchased A2 cardbase.) Tape the largest oval die so that the top of the die overhangs the fold. Die cut to form an oval folded cardbase. With a red marker color the inside edges of the cardbase. Repeat with green marker to the outside edges.
Using the same oval die, cut two ovals from green watermelon rind paper and two more ovals from red and black watermelon paper. Glue one of the red ovals inside the cardbase, fold cardbase in half and trim off red paper at fold. Repeat with the second red piece. Glue one green oval to the back side of cardbase. Trim at fold. Glue the last green oval to front of card.

The card front will be the only complete oval. All other panels should have been trimmed to allow the cardbase to fold. (Note in photo that a hint of red shows on the back of the card.)

Decorate the outside of the cardbase with sentiments cut from the collection pack papers.

Collage Mechanism: (Watch the assembly video for the Heart Collage Pop-Up located at the bottom of the linked page.) Cut the mechanism from red cardstock. Train folds and glue inside the cardbase. Allow the glue to dry before connecting the locking tabs. Cut sentiment panels from paper collection. Round the corners. Play with positioning of the panels onto the mechanism before permanently gluing in place. (I found that my side arms needed to be thin pieces and the top and bottom arms could handle larger panels.) Take the largest panel and fold in half before gluing over locking mechanism tabs.
Add other decorations to cardbase always checking for catchpoints to avoid.
Envelope: Decorated the back envelope flap with decorative strips from paper collection.
This card was made for Craft Roulette #216 whose parameters included for A2 project, baseball game colors, number(s) element and charm(s).
After I completed the process video I added thin strips of decorated paper to even out the borders of the front background paper as well as adding a second jump ring to the charm to have it hang more in the center of the frame.
Cardbase: Use a 5.5 x4.25-inch white piece of cardstock and cover front with confetti sprinkles patterned paper. Die cut half round notch from Waterfall Card die set at center bottom of short side of card.
Waterfall: Watch the assembly video at the bottom of the linked page for the Waterfall Card. I cut the mechanism pieces (pull strip and base) from yellow cardstock. The largest square die was used to cut four double-sided patterned paper pages. Assemble waterfall as shown in video.
Food Pop-Ups: Cut and assemble the ice cream cone from the Sweet Treats Charms set. The slice of cake and large candle are made using the Big Birthday Charms set. Cut off the charm loops on both. Cake icing has Glossy Accents clear gel on it. Candle flames have glitter gloss on them.
Cut small strips of patterned cardstock and fold in half and then fold the ends to the center fold to form a pop-up cube to glue into the first two pages. Once these pop-up cubes’ glue has dried, attach the food elements to cubes. The large candle is popped-up with two strips of cardstock behind it.
Sentiments: “Celebrate!” and “Happy Birthday” are from Word Set 2. The balloons and streams are from the Big Birthday Charms set. The quote by Iris Murdoch was in the paper collection. The back of the pull tab was stamped with “Inspired by Craft Roulette. Made by” and signature and CR episode listed.
Envelope: The back flap of the envelope is decorated with leftover strips of patterned paper.
I got this cute bunny mug die set on sale after Easter from Teaspoon of Fun. This Pixi Dust Designs die set has 22 dies to make the bunny face mug, a carrot, a cake slice and a macaroon.
Cardbase: Use an A2 (4 1/4 x 5 1/2-inches) side-fold horizontal card base (I used a purchased kraft cardbase and matching envelope.) cover the four panels with double-sided papers.
Bunny Mug: Cut the mug, large ears, eyes, cheeks and teeth from white cardstock. Cut nose and two inner ear piece from pink. From black, cut inner eye and eyelash circles. Use a pale-yellow ink to color teeth. Glue pieces together. With a fine-tipped black pen, add dots for whiskers on cheeks Also use black pen to outline cheeks, teeth and mug shape. Glue mug to card front and trim away cardbase around top half of mug.
Carrot: Cut the two carrot dies from different shades of orange. And the carrot top from green. Assemble with whole carrot piece on the bottom and then the carrot piece with three vs and top off with carrot greens. Use a fine-tipped black pen to add fine lines to add rounded shaping to the carrot and greens. Make two carrots.
Carrot Cake: Cut cake from brown and three icing pieces and thin oval from white. Lightly shade the icing piece with a pale-yellow ink. Add orange dots to brown cake piece. Glue the two ripple lines first using makes on cake piece and then attach the top icing piece.
This card was made for Craft Roulette #214 whose parameters included for Project – appreciation, candlelight colors, “Leave it to ….” element and retiform.
Cardbase: My finished card only used two rectangles of 9×3 3/4-inches (scored at 1/4-inch) and 8 3/4×3 3/4-inches. (Skip making the small panel.) After decorating front of tabbed rectangle, glue tab to back of smaller rectangle. Cover the card base in patterned paper.
Dancing Letters Mechanism: (Watch Karen Burniston’s Designer Challenge video for my inspiration for my card.) I did not reverse the Tea and Coffee Pop-Up mechanisms as Karen did. I folded all of my mechanisms as they were designed. My strips of plastic were the equivalent of two of the mechanism arm die glued together. Use glue dots or double-sided tape when attaching items to the plastic.
Sentiments: The front sentiment was computer generated and printed on copy paper. Then fussy cut into two lines of words. And glued in place.
Envelope: This card would fit into a #10 business envelope.
A few times a year, I get commissions from a pair of cats for cards to their humans. For Mother’s Day this year they picked an Anita Jerem illustration of two cats sleeping in bed under a heart dotted comforter. They like to use every year the sentiments from a Simon Says Stamp set Happy Meowther’s Day.
Cardbase: I used a purchased A2 (4 1/4 x 5 1/2-inch) plaid printed cardbase and matching white envelope. The image panel was adhered with double sided tape and the sentiments were stamped directly onto the image panel or cardbase.
Alcohol markers, not chosen Watercolor markers, not chosen
Front Panel: The Snoozing Kitties stamp works best with a stamping platform. Because I used StazOn ink a solvent ink, I only got one chance at stamping the complete image. I stamped the image on three separate pieces of cardstock and watercolor paper. Some images were faint in areas, so I filled them in with a 01 black fine tip pen before coloring. I experimented with watercolor brush markers and alcohol markers. I had more control over the intensity of color with the alcohol markers as well as a wider range of colors to choose (80 alcohol markers to 12 watercolor brush markers.) My chosen panel was the first one I colored with alcohol markers. Yellow cat colored with 37 pastel yellow, 38 pale yellow, 163 green bice and 120 black. Gray striped cat used 120 black, WG3 warm grey and WG5 warm grey. The comforter’s hearts were colored with 70 royal blue, 144 pale baby blue and 185 pale blue light. The shadows on the bedding wrinkles is WG1 warm grey. 70 royal blue was also used for the wallpaper stripes, while 185 pale blue light was used for the headboard. “Happy Meowther’s Day” was stamped in black over the wallpaper.
Inside Sentiments: All the sentiments inside the card are from the Happy Meowther’s Day stamp set. They include “Thank you for feeding me, cleaning up after me, and loving me more than anything else in the world. The feeling is mutual.” And “from the cats” with tiny paw prints and a heart. The heart is stamped in red while all the words and paw prints are in black.
Envelope: “Happy Meowther’s Day” is stamped on the back of the envelope flap in black ink with a red heart underneath it.
