May Flowers

Blue teacup-inside-sideCelebrating Mother with May flowers is a tradition. I was happy to see that Anna Griffin’s new teacup die set includes the ability to emboss flowers onto the edges and side of the cup and saucer.

This was my first try at using the new die set as well as some of Anna’s sentiment stamps. The teacup goes together easily following the enclosed instructions. I embossed the cup and saucer first using an embossing mat/plate and then die cut all the pieces.

Blue teacup-front

By using a preprinted card base from a card kit by Punch Studio that has been in my stash for a while, along with some of the butterfly toppers and pink flatback gems, the front of the card came together quickly. The inside paper is from Graphic 45. I cut two pieces so as not to cover the fold and used a green marker to color the inside edges of the card as a border to the floral paper.

I ended up heat embossing the decorative border on the gold metallic sentiment base with clear embossing powder. I learned that the metallic card I used is heat sensitive and had a minor curling effect happen.

To fill the cup I used flower embellishments from Anna Griffin as well. This vintage teacup card is perfect for celebrating Mother’s Day.

Wishing all mothers, a Happy Mother’s Day.

Father’s Day Waterfall Pop-up

Ed Fathers Day-front

This card was designed for a contest on Craftworld.com, but I had my own father in-mind as I created it. The mechanical action of the waterfall combined with the pop-up words make it feel like an early silent movie. Click here to see a short video of it.

To make the card you will need a 6 ½ x 5 inch card base, four 2 inch squares, one waterfall strip 1 ½ x 10 inches, one ½ x 4 ½ inches holding strip, and strong double sided tape 1/8 to 1/4 inches wide.

  1. Score waterfall strip at 2 5/16 inches, 2 15/16 inches, 3 9/16 inches and 4 3/16 inches. Place double sided tape below each score mark.2Ed Fathers Day- Main Strip
  2. Place tape on back ends of holding strip in such a manner as to have the center be 2 ½ inches free of tape. Adhere on card front 2 inches from bottom of card.1Ed Fathers Day-Holding strip
  3. Make a point at end of waterfall strip with out tape. Thread pointed end under holder strip making sure the taped side of waterfall strip face up when bent over as in photos and adhere all for squares to strip using tape under the score lines.

  • On a 1 by 2 ½ inch rectangle, score at 2 inches, 1 ½ inches, 1 inch, and ½ inch. Place a line of tape on one edge. Then cut into four even strips of ¼ inch wide by 2 ½ inches long. Fold into square rings adhering taped flap to form squares. You will need three of these pop-up rings or stands for the project, but if you are like me, these tiny rings fall on the floor and get lost so having an extra may come in handy.
  • Add double-sided tape to two sides of each ring. Peel tape and adhere to center of each flap as shown in photo. Slide the waterfall strip up and down to get folds and pop-up stands to work smoothly.

  • Decorate flaps using four copies of the same image on overlapping flaps, trim each image to fit each flap matching up where the image continues onto next flap. Use distress inks to “age” insides of flaps. Glue a word per pop-up ring to form “Happy Father’s Day.”8Ed Fathers Day-Pop-up Strips added
  • Compose on computer your own message for the waterfall pull strip (approximately 3 inches long) Punch a hole near point and added baker’s twine or ribbon as a pulling aid.
  • Ed Fathers Day-open

Inside of card you can add your personal message.

    Sunday Drive Celebration

Whitecar-frontI was so excited when I received the Sunday Drive die set from Spellbinders. This classic convertible as seen from the rear has the possibilities for other cards besides being for birthdays. There is an add-on set that says “Hitched” with flowers and tin cans tied to bumper.

I found the set easy to use but recommend having a pair of tweezers handy to glue and place the tiny taillights, box-ribbon-bow, and tying-off balloon threads. I also recommend having a small container or bag to put your die cut pieces into as you cut them out. They are quite easy to lose on your workspace or get dropped onto the floor.

    Whitecar-CU

All the pieces were cut from scraps in my stash. The silver matte card was one I had to use my embossing mat to get good definition on the bummer piece. I used metallic hologram papers from an old envelope for the balloons and glued them to white cardstock for the letters to show correctly.

These images are my first attempt at using the set.

When the Zoo Comes to You

    Zoo Bus -Front-CU

When the zoo comes to you it’s party time!  I was inspired by this adorable stamp and die set drawn by Bonnie Krebs for Art Impressions of a bus full of animals.

Zoo Bus -Front-CU-rightUsing Memento Tuxedo Black ink to stamp the images on white cardstock, I colored them with using watercolor pencils and a waterbrush. Once the colors were dry, I used a silver gel pen to color all the chrome trim on the bus and hubcaps. Using the matching dies, I cut the animals and bus out. I cut a second bus out to act as a backing for the bus. I had colored and cut a set of spare tires, so I cut away the tires on the colored bus so I could add dimension of the tires being beneath the bus.

Zoo Bus -Front-CU-leftNext I played with the placement of the animals in the bus and once satisfied with their placement, I glued them to the backside of the blue bus. For the cake rack and the monkey, I had to add small slips of cardstock for supports for the foam tape that adhered them to the bus frame. The koala bear was also foam taped to the back bus using the die cut door opening as my placement guides. The tires were glued flat to the backing bus’s wheels. (And while I toyed with the idea of making the wheels on the bus spin – mimicking the children’s song – I deciding against it.) Doubled sided foam bits from my stash were sandwiched between the two bus layers for dimension. Baker’s twine was taped to the back of the colored balloons and poked between the bus layers and glued.

Zoo Bus -Inside -WUsing Stampin’Up Dapper Denim blue ink I stamped both outside “For You on your birthday” sentiment on white cardstock and then the large “Happy Birthday” inside the card. The “For You” I heat embossed with sparkly snow embossing powder which added sparkle, but embossed clear.

Zoo Bus -Inside -CUOn the top inside panel I added another Art impression’s stamp of a tricycle riding elephant that I had colored and fussy cut out with its hat flying off.

Zoo Bus -Front-WThe completed card has the bus doors being able to be opened to shoe the koala bear.

    Sleepytime Dreams

Front - CUI decided to play with one of my new stamps and dies set from Art Impressions Tryfolds collection called Welcome Little One.

Tryfold -from aboveI started by following the instructions that came with the set and cut an 4 ½ x 11 inches piece of yellow cardstock and scored it at 3 5/8 inches from two long ends to come-up with a trifold card that is 4 ½ by 3 5/8 inches. You stamp the large crib first to the outside panel and die cut out the slats and crib opening. Next, using a stamping platform, I lined up the teddy bear stamp with the opening in the crib onto the second panel. Stamped and die cut as with first panel. Again, using the stamping platform, I lined up the baby stamp with the card close seeing through the openings in both panels. I stamped using Tuxedo Black memento ink.

    Panel 2 - CU

Using watercolor pencils, I colored all the images. I went back and stamped sentiments onto each panel. The card was cute, but lacked some pizzazz, so I trimmed the stamped images down some and adhered to Prima Bedtime Story journaling notecards. Because the middle 3rd panel was a 3 x 4 inches card, I had to fold the two larger 4 x 6 inches cards at 1 ½ inches and tape the middle panel to the tabs of the other panels. Final card size is 4 x 4 ½ inches.

    Panel 3

Using the teddy bear stamp, I used the Dapper Denim inkpad to stamp the envelope flap and I then colored the teddy bear only in the image with watercolor pencil.

    Sweet Sparkle

    Shaker Moms Day-Front CU

I kept dreaming about making this card using a lacy ribbon die and some rose paper that I had in my stash. I had watched Jennifer McGuire’s See-Through Shaker Cards video and was inspired to use some new glitter I had acquired. And Mother’s Day in the UK was being talked about on Craftworld.com. This card comes from all these inputs (and probably a few subconscious ones too.)

I took a card base folded it on the score line and placed a sample of the Joanna Sheen scalloped lace and marked out where I wanted the shaker openings to be. I then trimmed out the interior of the paper lace where the shakers were to be. Next, I cut the circles into both layers of the card.  If I had to do it over again, I would have made a template to mark all my papers where the circle cuts are.  I also would have made my patterned cardstock the card base.

Shaker Moms Day-insideBecause the glitter is very clingy with static to the acetate, I decide to use this quality in my design and my shakers are only the thickness of some recycled cardboard box cut into a square and the circle die-cut out. I adhered a strip of acetate to the inside of the back panel of card base with double-sided tape. The cardboard squares were glued to back of card over the circle openings. With the card on a flat surface I put pinches of glitter into the cardboard circles and then added glue to edges of cardboard and dropped a square of acetate over each cardboard square to seal up the shaker. (If I had it to do over, I would have used the temple to mark out the cardboard and make it one long panel instead of squares.)

IMG_7866Next, I traced as best I could the shaker circles onto the back side of the two outer printed cardstock panels and the two inner patterned paper pieces. With printed sides place together and taped with removable tape, I cut both outer panels together. Repeated the same process with inner pattern paper. Using double-sided tape and a few drops of glue, I adhered the outer panels and the inner papers lining up all the shaker holes. To hide the small gaps, I die cut four strips of scalloped lace from thin white paper using an un-named die by Joanna Sheen in my stash. There are five circles in the lace, I cut out the top, middle and bottom inner circles to correspond with the shaker circles. I glued the four lace pieces over the inner and outer panels’ circles.

Shaker Moms Day-sentiment-CUThe front of the card has a die cut scalloped oval with “Happy Mother’s Day” die cut from a recycled chocolate’s box. A multi-looped button is from tiny grosgrain red ribbon from my stash.
